Dear Colleagues:

It is a privilege to be appointed interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Stony Brook University, and I wholeheartedly welcome the opportunity to serve in this role.

First, I am pleased to announce the addition of new Associate Deans to the CAS leadership team. Join me in welcoming:

  • Judith Lochhead, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs; Department of Music. A former department chair and PTC member, Judy will oversee faculty promotion and mentoring.

  • Elizabeth Terese Newman, Associate Dean for Curriculum; Department of History. Elizabeth brings extensive experience with curriculum development in history and sustainability disciplines.

  • Timothy Glotch, Associate Dean for Operations and Facilities; Department of Geosciences. Tim brings extensive experience managing large multi-investigator grants and projects to his role in overseeing College and budget planning, as well as facilities.

  • Ellen Broselow, Senior Associate Dean; Department of Linguistics. A former department chair, Ellen has served as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs for three years and will assist through this year’s transition process to oversee staffing and manage general research projects.

I encourage you to acquaint yourselves with this expanded team to learn with whom you may need to connect with on specific matters. Visit our leadership team page here .

In the early days of my role as interim dean, I will be working closely with department chairs to develop a shared vision for the shape and future of the College of Arts and Sciences, continuing efforts to elevate its visibility. Department chairs have already engaged in similar conversations with their faculty during the self study process earlier this year; I encourage you to continue these dialogues as the academic year begins.

I appreciate the undertaking of the department chairs in their effort to produce the aforementioned self studies. In addition to initial conversations I’ve had with department chairs, these studies have been excellent resources of helpful information about each department and their individual needs, as well as in identifying both common and unique challenges and opportunities. The self studies can be found here .

Finally, I’d like to thank Dr. Sacha Kopp for his contributions to the College in his role as Dean over the past four years. The increase in applications to all CAS majors for fall 2018, as well as his efforts to promote the benefits of an interdisciplinary education, particularly the recently approved BA in Biology underscore his commitment to improving undergraduate education at Stony Brook. I wish him success for the future.

I look forward to working closely with faculty in our shared commitment to continued growth, creativity, scholarly excellence and inclusivity, as well as advancing discovery and dissemination of scholarship and innovation. And I look forward to moving forward -- together.

Sincerely,

Nicole Sampson
