Dear Members of the A&M-San Antonio Community,

It is my great privilege to be writing to you for the first time as the president of Texas A&M University-San Antonio. I am honored to build on the legacies of A&M-San Antonio’s previous two presidents, Dr. Maria Ferrier and Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson, and I’m grateful to Dr. Linda Schott for her service and superb leadership as interim president.

My wife, Mari, and I were fortunate to meet many faculty and staff during visits to San Antonio this summer and the welcome we’ve received has been incredibly warm. We both look forward to getting to know all of you and the community better. As South Texas natives, Mari and I are so happy to be home.

I researched A&M-San Antonio very carefully before applying for the presidency and everything I learned about the University then and throughout the selection process only deepened my certainty that I wanted to serve as its leader. As a passionate believer in the value of higher education and of service, I embrace A&M-San Antonio’s focus on upward mobility for our students and emphasis on contributing to the community. These values resonate deeply with me and have guided me in my own work as an educator and administrator.

I am excited when I consider the great potential of A&M-San Antonio and all of the opportunities that lay ahead of us. Certainly, great things are happening across our vibrant campus community and I look forward to learning about them from all of you—the students, faculty, and staff who make our university all of the wonderful things that it is. Listening and learning are the most important things I’ll be doing in my first semester with you this fall, and far beyond. I want to hear directly from you what excites you most about A&M-San Antonio and, of course, what we could do better.

I want you to know that I come to A&M-San Antonio with a sincere heart, a listening ear, an open mind, a collaborative spirit, and an abundance of passion to advance the mission of our university.

I am proud to be your president.

With appreciation,

Salvador Hector Ochoa
