A Message from RVEF and RVUSD

Dear Rincon Valley Families,

With the news that Science Facilitator positions are being considered for elimination in the 2020-2021 school year along with the recent conduction of RVEF's #GivingTuesdayNow campaign that focused on raising funds to supplementally fund this program, we understand that there may be some confusion as to where donations are going.

For many years, the Rincon Valley Education Foundation has worked in partnership with RVUSD to support the district's science program by supplementally funding the science facilitator positions. Several months before the beginning of a new fiscal year, when a preliminary budget is being assembled for adoption, RVEF works to predict how much can be fundraised and subsequently given to this program over the course of the year. In late spring of 2019, RVEF assessed that our organization would be able to raise at least $40,000 during the 2019-2020 fiscal year. When given this information, the district fronted the funds, waiting for the Foundation to then replenish the budget line in June of 2020, after a successful year of campaigning and hosting of fundraising events.

As RVEF's annual campaign started, the Foundation saw that our goal was in sight. The planning of the Gala and registration to participate in the Human Race led us to believe that not only would we reach our goal, but that we may even surpass it. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the shelter-in-place order forced these two events to be canceled along with spring enrichment classes and other revenue generating opportunities including ticket sales for the Summer Movie Series through Santa Rosa Cinemas. The possibility of developing a summer camp session was halted and we are currently unsure if the scheduled drama camp to be held at the end of July will need to be refunded.

Grappling with these financial consequences, RVEF continued to work to find ways to support our pledge and plan for the future. The #GivingTuesdayNow campaign was one way we took action in order to try to honor the commitment made. With the close of the fiscal year quickly approaching it is time for the preliminary budget to be assembled. The Foundation's current financial circumstances and predicted funding opportunities for next year will provide RVEF's Board of Directors the information needed to make the decision of how much our June gift to the school board will be.

The Rincon Valley Union School District both supports and benefits from RVEF's efforts and hard work to support our students through valuable programs and we understand that this year all major fundraising efforts were cut short by the pandemic. There has been no failure on the part of any organization. We work together collaboratively to support our staff and students.

The Science Facilitator positions are being considered for elimination in the 2020-2021 school year for two reasons: next year's budget is looking much tighter than anticipated due to the current economic status of the state therefore we must proceed with financial caution. Secondly, we are unsure what school will look like in the Fall and we need the flexibility to shift funds to other resources as we look at schedules that provide for social distancing. We are extremely grateful for the Rincon Valley Educational Foundation for their commitment to the Science Facilitator program over the past many years and we look forward to working with the foundation to fund identified programs that will no longer be able to be supported through the district budget.

Durante muchos años, la Fundación Educativa de Rincon Valle ha trabajado en asociación con RVUSD para apoyar el programa de ciencias del distrito financiando de manera suplementaria los puestos de facilitador de ciencias. Varios meses antes del comienzo de un nuevo año fiscal, cuando se está preparando un presupuesto preliminar para su adopción, RVEF trabaja para predecir cuántos fondos se pueden recaudar y posteriormente dar a este programa en el transcurso del año. A fines de la primavera de 2019, RVEF evaluó que nuestra organización podría recaudar al menos $40,000 durante el año fiscal 2019-2020. Cuando se le dio esta información, el distrito presentó los fondos, esperando que la Fundación reponga la línea presupuestaria en junio de 2020, después de un exitoso año de campañas y organización de eventos de recaudación de fondos.

Cuando comenzó la campaña anual de RVEF, la Fundación vio que nuestro objetivo estaba a la vista. La planificación de la Gala y el registro para participar en la Raza Humana nos llevaron a creer que no solo alcanzaríamos nuestro objetivo, sino que incluso podríamos superarlo. Cuando llegó la pandemia de COVID-19, la orden de refugio en el lugar obligó a cancelar estos dos eventos junto con las clases de enriquecimiento de primavera y otras oportunidades de generación de ingresos, incluida la venta de entradas para la serie Summer Movie a través de los cines Santa Rosa. La posibilidad de desarrollar una sesión de campamento de verano se detuvo y actualmente no estamos seguros de si será necesario reembolsar el campamento de drama programado para fines de julio.

Al lidiar con estas consecuencias financieras, RVEF continuó trabajando para encontrar formas de apoyar nuestra promesa y planificar para el futuro. La campaña #GivingTuesdayNow fue una de las formas en que tomamos medidas para tratar de honrar el compromiso asumido. Con el cierre del año fiscal acercándose rápidamente, es hora de reunir el presupuesto preliminar. Las circunstancias financieras actuales de la Fundación y las oportunidades de financiamiento previstas para el próximo año proporcionarán a la Junta Directiva de RVEF la información necesaria para tomar la decisión de cuánto será nuestro regalo de junio para la junta escolar.

Los puestos de facilitador de ciencias se están considerando para su eliminación en el año escolar 2020-2021 por dos razones: el presupuesto del próximo año se ve mucho más ajustado de lo previsto debido al estado económico actual del estado, por lo tanto, debemos proceder con precaución financiera. En segundo lugar, no estamos seguros de cómo se verá la escuela en el otoño y necesitamos la flexibilidad para transferir fondos a otros recursos a medida que miramos los horarios que proporcionan distanciamiento social. Estamos extremadamente agradecidos con el Fondo Educativo de Rincon Valley por su compromiso con el programa de Facilitador de Ciencias durante los últimos años y esperamos trabajar con la fundación para financiar programas identificados que ya no podrán ser apoyados por el presupuesto del distrito.
