M'KOR MAIL
July 11, 2018
Author Ursula LeGuin once wrote: "It is good to have an end to journey towards, but it is the journey that matters in the end."

As we come to the conclusion of the Book of Numbers and the approaching end to the wilderness sojourn of the Israelites, our Torah portion this week begins with Moses recounting the forty-two stops the people have made during their journey through the desert.

It is easy to skim right over the place-names and mention of various encampments, but each represents a very specific and vitally important piece of the community's journey. Each stop along the way had a purpose, and now, looking back, it becomes much clearer that while each place had its own narrative associated with it, there is a connecting line of cause and effect running through these seemingly separate stories that helps to move the people forward.

Similarly in our own lives - sometimes the moments we face seem disjointed and separate from one another, but standing at a distance and looking back on our life-journey, we notice the connecting links of how each of those moments brought us to where we stand today.

This Friday evening, join Cantor Harrison and me for our Kabbalat Shabbat service at 6:30 pm, during which we will also be sharing blessings with David and Judi Weinberg in honor of their 40th wedding anniversary!

And, Shabbat morning, I'll be leading Torah Study beginning at 10:00 am.

L'shalom,

Rabbi Jennifer L. Frenkel
