The Talmud teaches, Ner l'echad, ner l'mei'ah - One person's candle serves as a light for many. Throughout this coming weekend, we will have several opportunities to celebrate shining lights in our M'kor Shalom community! On Friday evening at 6:30 pm, we have a very special Shabbat Mishpacha service, as we will be honoring Merle Steinberg for her years of dedicated service as the Director of Education of our Religious School. We know Merle has touched so many lives here at M'kor Shalom, and we are so happy to have the opportunity to share words of blessings with her for all she has brought to our students and to our Family of Families. Kol Noar, our youth choir will join us, and our Shabbat Mishpacha service includes family-friendly songs, a brief Torah service and hakafah, teaching moments about the prayers we say, and a story appropriate for all ages! We hope you'll join us! Saturday morning, I will lead our Torah Study session at 9:00 am, and Scott Kushner will lead our Spice Up Your Judaism session at 10:30 am. And, of course, Sunday evening (5:00 pm) is our 2019 M'kor Or "Source of Light" Celebration! We will honor Gail Donner, the recipient of our Marylee & Stuart Alperin Leadership Award, recognizing her past and continuing contributions for and on behalf of our congregation. And we will also honor Merle Steinberg, as she receives the Guiding Light Educator Award, celebrating her dedication in helping to provide a Jewish education to our children. Both Gail and Merle continue to make our M'kor Shalom community a place of warmth and light, and we thank them both for their continued devotion and commitment to our Family! And, just a reminder, tonight (Wednesday, 7:00 pm), we will be watching the film "Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem," about an Israeli woman fighting for three years to obtain a divorce from her devout husband who refuses to grant his permission to dissolve the marriage. The movie explores religious requirements for Jews to divorce, dramatizes the emotional weight of the decision, and confronts the imbalance of power between husband, wife, and the court. After the film, I will lead a discussion on the issues it raises and the contemporary responses to the questions it brings up. L'shalom, Rabbi Jennifer L. Frenkel
If you have the name of someone you would like to have included in our Healing Prayer (Mi Shebeirach) that is recited at our Shabbat services, please let us know by noon each Friday so we can give the name to the rabbis.
