M'KOR MAIL
September 14, 2017
Our overture to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is our Selichot evening program this Saturday evening. We will include study beginning at 8:30 pm, followed by dessert at 9:30 pm. At 10:00 pm we will join together for the Selichot Service, introducing melodies, themes and prayers for the coming Yamim Noraim ("Days of Awe" aka "the High Holy Days"). We will share Havdalah, the changing of our Torah covers to the white mantels of the season, and the sound of the Shofar.

Our study theme this year is "The Promise of Uncertainty - A Look at Unetaneh Tokef." Unetaneh Tokef is the High Holy Day prayer that includes "On Rosh Hashanah it is written and on Yom Kippur it is sealed...Who will live, and who will die? Who will be at ease, and who will be troubled? Who will find peace of  mind, and who will be afflicted..." But then this same prayer concludes with "But teshuvah, t'filah, and tzedakah, repentance, prayer, and righteousness" can make a difference. Just what kind of a difference? Come and explore at our Selichot program and service. Rabbi Frenkel and I will be sharing some commentaries and insights from Jewish tradition about this prayer and the provocative way that it combines hope and acceptance - "the promise of uncertainty."

Unetaneh Tokef translates as "we will proclaim the awesome nature of this day." And these Days of Awe are designed to help us face the most important questions of life and of living; of fragility and stability; and of the search for transcendent meaning in an uncertain world, through which we move all too quickly. The Yamin Noraim offer so many rich opportunities to reflect on teshuvah - the turning-and-returning that allows for apology, forgiveness, pardon and atonement, and sends us into the New Year with hope. Selichot helps us to prepare to make the most of these opportunities.

This Friday night, we welcome Shabbat at our 8:00 pm service (which will also be webcast). On Shabbat morning, Torah study will be at 9:00 am, led by Rabbi Frenkel. At 10:30 am, Spice Up Your Judaism resumes, led by Carl Viniar, with snacks, schmoozing and coffee between the two study sessions (10:00-10:30 am).

Shabbat Shalom and Shanah Tovah!
