M'KOR MAIL
April 10, 2019
One of the strong and venerable traditions of M'kor Shalom is the annual Confirmation class trip to Israel. This Friday night at our 6:30 pm Kabbalat Shabbat service, Cantor Harrison and I will have the honor of sharing Tefilat Haderech, a blessing for a journey, with our Confirmation students as they anticipate their departure on April 20.

Introducing our students to the Land and the State of Israel is exciting, engaging, and challenging. Learning about the history, being immersed in the rhythms of everyday Hebrew, discovering the diverse culture, and standing in places "where it all happened" are essential elements of creating wonderful and sustaining memories for our Confirmation students.

And at the same time, our students are immersed in the challenges of understanding contemporary Israeli social, political and national issues, which as the Israeli elections this week demonstrate, remain complex and complicated. Our students return as participants in the on-going Jewish conversation about Israel - embodying attachment to and support of the State of Israel, while continuing to shape their own opinions about the differing perspectives on how Israel will manage the challenges it faces.

In addition to our 6:30 pm Kabbalat Shabbat service Friday, on Saturday morning, Torah study at 9:00 am will be led by Mark Pinzur. At 10:30 am Spice Up Your Judaism will be led by Scott Kushner. And at our 5:45 pm Afternoon Service, Hannah Sturtz will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah. Mazal tov to Hannah and her family!

Shabbat Shalom!

Rabbi Richard Hirsh
