Vestry Corner
Church of the Holy Comforter, Vienna, VA
January 20, 2023
The Vestry welcomed four new Vestry members, beginning their three-year term in January — Kathy DeSanti-Paulini, Sherryl Dorch, Steve Littlewood, and Linda Lee Malone. They were installed during the 9:30 a.m. worship service on January 8.

We want to thank the following individuals who have completed their three-year Vestry term for their service and tremendous work — Lizzie Becker, Lynne Brents, Jason Crum, and Zara Harris. We especially want to thank Jason for his incredible leadership in 2022 as Senior Warden!

One important responsibility of the Vestry is for representation, a liaison, and/or leadership in Holy Comforter’s ministries, boards, and administrative committees. For 2023, the Vestry members will be involved in the following:

  • Adult Faith Formation - Linda Lee Malone, Liaison
  • Buildings & Grounds Committee/Ministry Center - Brian Land, Chair
  • Capital Campaign Updates/Review - David Grove, Liaison
  • Communications - Ashley Boam, Liaison
  • Endowment Board - Suzie Garrod, Liaison
  • Episcopal Church Women (ECW)/Pennywise - Chris Doyle, Liaison
  • Finance Committee - Mark Schmitt, Chair
  • Stewardship Committee - Steve Littlewood, Chair
  • Fellowship - Sherryl Dorch, Liaison
  • Newcomers, Growth, Diversity & Inclusion - Harriet Church, Chair
  • Outreach - Byron Knight, Liaison
  • Preschool Board/Youth Group/Iona Fund Board - Kathy DeSanti-Paulini, Liaison

Suzie Garrod will serve as your Senior Warden and David Grove as your Junior Warden.

Please reach out to the appropriate Vestry member if you have questions about a specific ministry, committee, or board, especially if you have a personal desire to become more involved or are interested in volunteering.

At the end of 2022 the Vestry took part in an internal Mutual Ministry Review designed to review and evaluate the ministries at Holy Comforter specific to the parish’s mission in our Christian community. Each Vestry member was asked to pray and answer a series of questions. The answers to those questions were aggregated and discussed. From that discussion two themes came out of that Review:

  1. How can we be more effective at what we are doing now?
  2. How can we grow as a congregation?

As these two themes were discussed, to assist us in moving forward tactically and strategically, four areas of focus were identified:

  1. Communication
  2. Volunteerism
  3. Growth
  4. Strategic planning

On Saturday January 14 your Vestry spent half a day on a retreat in the Ministry Center to reflect and pray for 2023, specific to the two identified themes and four areas focus. Our goal is to have these as “pillars” for 2023.

As we move forward in 2023 your Vestry will continue its work on these two themes and four areas of focus. We look forward to sharing more details on this at the Annual Parish Meeting on Sunday, February 26. Please keep us in your prayers.
