Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Just as the Apostle Paul urged that “all things should be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40), we believe it is wise and faithful to periodically review and strengthen the foundational documents that guide our shared life in ministry. In that spirit, the Board of Servant Leaders is bringing forward proposed revisions to our Constitution and Bylaws, as part of a broader and ongoing review of how we operate. As you may recall we recently updated the Policy Manual, but it has been nearly 20 years since the Constitution and Bylaws of Prince of Peace were last updated.
The proposed updates maintain our policy-based governance model and do not involve major changes to the congregation’s structure or organization. Many key aspects remain unchanged. These revisions are intended to bring greater clarity, reflect current practices, and align with best practices across our wider church body. To inform this work, the Board of Servant Leaders reviewed a variety of sample constitutions and bylaws from congregations across the Synod, with particular attention to those within our own district. In addition, we actively solicited and received feedback from a number of congregation members, which has been valuable in shaping these proposals. A summary of the proposed changes follows and a redlined version of the proposed changes is attached so you can see what’s been updated. You’ll also find notes in blue text that offer explanations and context for many of the revisions.
Proposed Changes to the Constitution:
- Added a section identifying other called workers (beyond the pastoral office)
- Included removal provisions for BoSL members for clarity and accountability
- Added a section defining Synodical membership
- Clarified language regarding property rights
- Added a section explicitly identifying and recognizing the Bylaws
- Included a section detailing how the Constitution is amended
- Made various editorial and formatting updates for clarity and consistency
Proposed Changes to the Bylaws:
- Included a provision for electronic meetings
- Removed the outdated category of “other officers”
- Described the roles and structure of the Office of Public Ministry at Prince of Peace
- Added a section to explicitly recognize and reference ministry staff
- Included a section detailing how the Bylaws are amended
- Made various editorial and formatting updates for clarity and consistency
We plan to bring these proposed changes forward for discussion and a vote at the Annual Congregational Meeting on June 1. Between now and then, if you have any questions, thoughts, or would just like to talk through the updates, we encourage you to reach out to David Leege or any other member of the BoSL. We welcome your engagement and value your voice.
Thank you for your continued partnership in the Gospel and your faithful support of the ministry we share at Prince of Peace.
In Christ’s service,
The Board of Servant Leaders (BoSL)
