From Chicago to the Papacy

Archivists at the Clerk’s Office discovered a document that traces Pope Leo XIV’s lineage to his grandfather being in Cook County in 1920. Salvatore Giovanni Riggitano initiated the naturalization process here, marking the family's first recorded steps in the United States. This exciting find connects a global religious leader to local Chicago history, right through the halls of the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County Archives.

To contact the Archives Department and learn more about the records they hold, call (312) 603-6628 or email archives@cookcountycourt.com.

Discoveries Made in the

Archives Department

Our Archives team was filing away papers related to the Estate of Gurdon S. Hubbard, a man who was influential in the development of the city of Chicago, when they came across a promissory note dated December 4, 1835. This makes it the oldest document found by our Archives team, as it predates the Chicago Fire and the city's incorporation.
