Innovative Educator Selected as Next Superintendent
of the City School District of New Rochelle
Jonathan P. Raymond has been selected by the New Rochelle Board of Education as the next Superintendent of the City School District of New Rochelle.
 
The Board unanimously approved a three-year contract with Raymond during a meeting tonight at City Hall.
 
“We are excited about Mr. Raymond’s vision for collaborating with our children, community and talented and committed teachers and staff to ensure every student is challenged, nurtured and supported as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Board of Education President Rachel Relkin.

Raymond was gratified by the opportunity to serve New Rochelle. “I am committed to being supportive of the whole child and engaging with the community by Listening and Learning,” he said. “Building relationships will be the foundation of our vision and action plan. We will make every decision with the best interests of our children in mind.”
“I am honored by the New Rochelle Board of Education’s faith in my abilities and dedication to New Rochelle’s students and families,” he added.
Raymond, who has committed to living in New Rochelle, has extensive educational and executive leadership experience, having served as Superintendent of the Sacramento City Unified School District in California and Chief Accountability Officer of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system in North Carolina. He also served as President of the Stuart Foundation, the largest funder of kindergarten-through-grade-12 education in California. Most recently, Raymond was Executive Director of the Massachusetts COVID-19 Relief Fund.

A passionate advocate for excellence and equity, Raymond’s work in Sacramento centered on supporting the whole child. He was a Fellow at the Broad Academy, a fellowship for highly motivated, accomplished professionals who drive excellence and equity to power real, lasting impacts for students and families. He completed the Executive Management Program at Harvard Business School and earned a law degree from the George Mason Law School in Arlington, VA. In addition, he holds a master of arts degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where he also earned his bachelor’s degree.
 
The Board expressed its gratitude to Dr. Alex Marrero, who stepped up to lead the District during one of its most difficult years. President Relkin said, “Our appreciation for Dr. Marrero’s leadership during this uncharted journey is immeasurable.” 

Community engagement was a dynamic component of the Board of Education’s selection process. A Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC), composed entirely of volunteers, provided guidance from the start of the process. The community at large was invited to view one-hour video interviews with Mr. Raymond and Dr. Marrero, the finalists for the superintendent role, and review their credentials on the District’s website, nred.org, before offering impressions via a survey. Representatives from stakeholder groups – including the District’s professional teachers and staff/administrator unions, PTA Council and SEPTA, and the CAC – participated in the final in-person presentations with the opportunity to ask follow-up questions of the two candidates. The Board appreciates the participation of the community and stakeholders, and their diverse viewpoints and feedback.

Raymond’s start date as Superintendent is being determined. The Board of Education aims to have him in place by July 1, 2021.

Jonathan P. Raymond ha sido seleccionado por la Junta de Educación de New Rochelle como el próximo Superintendente del Distrito Escolar de la Ciudad de New Rochelle.

La Junta aprobó por unanimidad un contrato de tres años con Raymond durante una reunión esta noche en el Ayuntamiento.

"Estamos entusiasmados con la visión del Sr. Raymond de colaborar con nuestros niños, la comunidad y los maestros y el personal talentosos y comprometidos para garantizar que cada estudiante sea desafiado, nutrido y apoyado a medida que salimos de la pandemia de COVID-19", dijo Rachel Relkin, Presidenta de la Junta de Educación.

A Raymond le agradó la oportunidad de servir a New Rochelle. “Estoy comprometido a apoyar al niño en su totalidad y a involucrarme con la comunidad escuchando y aprendiendo”, dijo. “Construir relaciones será la base de nuestra visión y plan de acción. Tomaremos todas las decisiones teniendo en cuenta el interés superior de nuestros niños".

Raymond, quien se ha comprometido a vivir en New Rochelle, tiene una amplia experiencia en liderazgo educativo y ejecutivo, y se desempeñó como Superintendente del Distrito Escolar Unificado de la Ciudad de Sacramento en California y Director de Responsabilidad del sistema escolar de Charlotte-Mecklenburg en Carolina del Norte. También se desempeñó como presidente de la Fundación Stuart, el mayor patrocinador de la educación desde jardín de infantes hasta el grado 12 en California. Más recientemente, Raymond fue Director Ejecutivo del Fondo de Ayuda COVID-19 de Massachusetts.

Se invitó a la comunidad en general a ver entrevistas en video de una hora con el Sr. Raymond y el Dr. Marrero, los finalistas para el puesto de superintendente, y revisar sus credenciales en el sitio web del Distrito, nred.org, antes de ofrecer impresiones a través de una encuesta.
