One Month Down! Let's Talk Attendance:

It hardly seems possible that we have a month under our belts already and we are quickly approaching autumn. Thank you to our students, families, and staff for your patience in rolling out another academic year. Sometimes adjustments need to be made to enable things to run smoothly and you have all been great team players in ensuring the year starts off right! I also appreciate you watching our first episode of Sixty Seconds with the Superintendent.

The topic of attendance is important for a variety of reasons outside of the obvious. For example, poor attendance has serious implications for students' outcomes as they progress past school.

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, "High school dropouts have been found to exhibit a history of negative behaviors, including high levels of absenteeism throughout their childhood, at higher rates than high school graduates. These differences in absentee rates were observed as early as kindergarten, and students who eventually dropped out of high school missed significantly more days of school in first grade than their peers who graduated from high school. In eighth grade, this pattern was even more apparent, and, by ninth grade, attendance was shown to be a key indicator significantly correlated with high school graduation."

Attending school not only strengthens students' academic achievements, but teaches discipline, creates structure, extends to them a sense of community, and, in many cases, ensures they receive regular meals. Further, learning socialization skills and responsibility in school contributes to success post-graduation.

We recognize the trials that sometimes contribute to absence from school and we know they often can include transportation, social and family issues, and physical well-being. We ask that you communicate with us so that we can find a solution together.

We also encourage families to take a positive and proactive approach to their child's attendance. Small rewards, positive affirmations, and encouragement go a long way toward helping your child attend school consistently.

If you experience extenuating circumstances and need support, please contact your school's leadership team or counselors so we can all work together to form an achievable attendance plan.

Thanks for being part of our team!

GREAT THINGS ARE HAPPENING IN OUR SCHOOLS

Thomas Ewing

Mr. Jason Picklesimer has received the 2024 Phil Mackie Award from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern Ohio. A volunteer for many years, Mr. Picklesimer, who teaches woodworking, helped his students create wooden toys for the agency last Christmas. He was recognized for his generosity of time and talent!

"His acts of service brought joy and smiles to our Littles. He and his students made the holidays special and memorable. Jason has already committed to making our holiday special again this year. He shows true Phil Mackie spirit." - Jolyn Pugh, Director

General Sherman

During the first week of school, students and staff discussed expectations and how they plan to have a great year. All students voted and the results were made into a treatment agreement that students and staff will abide by. These were made into posters and placed in the hallways and all classrooms to remind staff and students about their commitment to one another.

Bridges

Leslie Cooksey, 4-H Educator, Fairfield County OSU Extension Office, brought the Chickquest program to the students in the Bridges Program. Students will spend a month observing chicken eggs daily and learning about the life and development of a chicken. The students are also completing a poster of the program for the Fairfield County Fair.

Medill Elementary

Medill's new School Resource Officer, Officer Burke, enjoyed connecting with students at recess recently! Also, students at Medill are hitting the books for their birthdays! Thanks to the PTO, students pick out a book, a pencil and a book mark when it is their birthday. Reading is the gift that keeps on giving!

Gorsuch West Elementary

Gorsuch West students can earn a MasterBuilder Award by following the 6 Character Building Blocks. Awards are read over the announcements and two students per grade level are randomly drawn to become MasterBuilders of the Week. These students get their pictures taken for Facebook, and get to select a reward.

Tarhe Preschool

Preschool students are enjoying exploring the newly updated playground! The blue poured-in-place surface allows students of all abilities to have greater access to the structures while developing motor skills on the new playground equipment. Personally, we really like the color scheme!

Mrs. Armstrong’s 3rd grade class is getting creative in art with Mrs. Marshall, learning all about lines, shapes, and colors! We’re thrilled to have Art, Music, Library, Physical Education, and Technology classes here every day of the week, enriching our students' learning experience.

Tarhe Trails Elementary

Second grade students at Tarhe Trails learned and wrote about what it means to be a hero in recognition of the events that occurred on September 11, 2001. They also learned about heroes in our community who continue to make a difference.

What is Portrait of a Graduate?

Lancaster City Schools has been the place to be for learning, caring, and succeeding for the past several years. As part of our mission and vision for the district, we developed our Portrait of a Graduate. This program was integrated into our district to build bridges to life beyond school. Our students will be prepared to succeed in life after high school while showing a high level of social-emotional skills, and effective and professional communication. With the strong community that unites Lancaster City Schools, we can work together to better prepare our students for success beyond school.
