Pathways to Possibilities and Student Success           June 12, 2019
   A Message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Community Members,

The last day of school is June 21. What a year it's been! Thank you for your partnership in your child's education. This past year has been filled with hands-on, engaging learning activities and powerful connections. We will miss our students this summer and hope everyone will commit to activities and reading to keep their brains activated!

While this school year is ending, we are gearing up for our summer programs: K Camp, Summer Scholars, and Summer STEAM & CTE Academy. K Camp and Summer Scholars begin on Monday, July 8, 2019, and run through August 2, 2019. Our Summer STEAM & CTE Academy, for incoming middle school students will be held the week of August 19-23.

As you know, we have bond-funded construction upgrades underway throughout our school district. At our June 5, 2019 board meeting, the Board of Education approved the construction contract for Increment II of the Truckee High School project which includes the modernization of the original building and construction of the new library and student support areas. Unfortunately, we are finding a huge escalation in overall construction costs and this project is over budget. We believe it's important to complete the full scope of work we promised our community while considering value engineering to reduce costs in addition to looking at other funding methods (i.e. through the state) to cover excess costs. In our next Education Connection newsletter, we'll provide updates on each of our current construction projects.

Celebrating What's Right in Tahoe Truckee
  • At last week's board meeting we recognized our 2019 retirees and celebrated their years of service to our students, staff, parents and the entire community. We have 16 retirees this year and combined, they have a total of 359 years of service to our district and our scholars. We appreciate all they have done for our youth and wish them the best in retirement!
  • Our Class of 2019! I would like to congratulate our graduating seniors and acknowledge all of their hard work, accomplishments, and community service hours they've given back to the community. This is an exciting time for them, and I wish each and every one of them success and happiness in the new opportunities that lie ahead.  In an article below, you will see a partial list of the colleges and universities the Class of 2019 have been accepted to. It is impressive!
  • Many of our sports teams won regional and state championships! Way to go Lakers and Wolverines.
  • Truckee High High School was named to the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence's 2018-2019 California Honor Roll. The honor roll recognizes schools and school districts that have demonstrated consistent high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement levels over time, and a reduction in achievement gaps among student populations. For high schools, the Honor Roll recognition also includes measures of college readiness.
  • Seven of our teachers earned the 2019 Placer County Teachers Who Make a Difference award: Jason Flesock of North Tahoe High School, Carey Parlette of Cold Stream Alternative, Tamara Chisholm of Truckee High School, Adelaide Massetani of Alder Creek Middle School, Marguerite Paras of Truckee Elementary, Abby Osborn of Tahoe Lake Elementary, and Kelley Ogilvy of Kings Beach Elementary.
  • North Tahoe High School named a California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education.
It's a time of celebrations and I'd like to encourage everyone to be responsible in their celebrations and to make this a sober end of the school year. We want everyone to be with us in the future!

Sincerely,

Robert J. Leri, Ed.D.
Superintendent Chief Learning Officer
Why they love working with kids
Teachers have one of the most important jobs in the world. Their work and impact extend far beyond the boundaries of the classroom. They educate and shape our youth. They teach them life skills. Their job takes passion, heart, and commitment. In each Education Connection, teachers across the district will share why they love teaching. We'll also hear from a classified employee. These are our front-line employees who make a huge difference in a positive school and district environment. From transporting and feeding students to teaching them vital skills and ensuring that schools are operating smoothly, classified employees are integral to the success of TTUSD.

Anna Davis, Second-Grade Teacher, Truckee Elementary
I have the best job in the whole world and I've had it for 34 years! I get to spend six hours a day with kids and witness their learning and growth right before my eyes. I love seeing the light in their eyes and it's such a wonderful feeling to build connections with students and watch them blossom and become amazing people. I'm getting paid to do something that I so love to do!

Marcie Schreiber, Campus Monitor, North Tahoe School
I love my job as Campus Monitor at NTHS and NTS. I wear many hats in my position which has given me the opportunity to get to know the students on a personal level. I am a friend and Mom to many. The kids make me happy!
Congratulations to the Class of 2019!
Our Class of 2019 has accomplished a great deal and now they are about to embark on an exciting new chapter in their lives. Many have been accepted to many prestigious colleges and universities across the country and we'd like to show off a partial list of college and university offers our new graduates received.

Many of our graduates have received college scholarships, some multiple scholarships! Our local community played a big role in supporting our scholar's continued education and our graduates received scholarships from local foundations, non-profits, community organizations and individual trusts, many facilitated by the Tahoe Truckee Community Scholarship, an umbrella organization that receives funding from various local organizations and nonprofits. We appreciate the community's generous support of our graduating students.
