亚特兰大NACA成功举办促进亚太裔社区精神健康活动,WAVES协办

2024年10月5日,华协(NACA - the National Association of Chinese Americans)与美国华人联盟心理健康组织(UCA WAVES)在亚特兰大举办了一场具有里程碑意义的有关亚裔亲子关系和心理健康的研讨会,主题为“亚裔父母,美国孩子; 我们的故事,我们的心声”。

 

近100名与会者参加了此次研讨会,反映了社区的需求。除了大多数来自大陆、少数来自台湾、香港和印度尼西亚的亚裔外,我们的与会者还包括高中辅导员和来自北卡的美国自杀预防基金会健康公平与参与副总裁Victor Armstrong。


这次研讨会获得与会者的一致好评,会后有26人报名成为心理健康活动的志愿者。WAVES将在12月与NACA合作开办一次精神健康急救培训课程。

On October 5, 2024, the National Association of Chinese Americans (NACA), in partnership with Unite Chinese Americans Youth Mental Health Collaborative (UCA WAVES), hosted a milestone seminar on Asian American parenting and mental health in Atlanta GA, titled “Asian Parents, American Children; Our Stories, Our Voice.” 

 

Approximately 100 attendees participated, reflecting urgent unmet needs in the community. Majority of the attendees are from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Indonesia. Other attendees also included high school counselors, and Victor Armstrong, Vice President for Health Equity and Engagement at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention from North Carolina.


The seminar was well received by participants and 26 people signed up to volunteer post conference. WAVES will hold a Mental Health First Aid Training in December in partnership with NACA.

飓风海伦妮(Helene)为北卡西部山区带来了前所未有的灾难。道路被冲毁,房屋遭受洪水侵袭,至少200人不幸罹难。电力和通讯全面中断,水厂停摆,整个社区的居民正面临严峻的生存挑战,亟需食品、饮用水等基本生活物资。


在这艰难的时刻,北卡华人联合会(CAFA)联合北卡50个华人社团,呼吁华人同胞伸出援手,捐资捐物,为灾区居民提供紧急帮助,为北卡西部灾区的重建贡献一份力量,帮助他们重拾希望,重建美好家园!

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, UCA Waves partnered with 50 local Chinese organizations to launch the Western North Carolina Disaster Relief Initiative, a collaborative effort to provide vital assistance to communities in western North Carolina. 


Together, 51 local Chinese organizations, including UCA WAVES, mobilized to provide resources and volunteers to deliver food, supplies, and shelter to those affected by the storm. Through fundraising efforts and community outreach, these organizations not only offered immediate relief but also fostered a spirit of solidarity among diverse groups. Their collaborative approach highlighted the importance of unity in the face of natural disasters, ensuring that vulnerable populations received the support they needed during a challenging time.

UCA WAVES Mid-Autumn Festival Luncheon 

UCA WAVES举办中秋节聚餐联谊活动

2024年9月19日,UCA WAVES在北卡罗来纳州Cary市举办了一场温馨的中秋节聚餐联谊活动,30多位WAVES的合作伙伴、志愿者、朋友共聚一堂,一起分享大家带来的美食,拥抱老朋友,结识新朋友,共同欢庆这一象征团圆的中国传统节日。


此次活动吸引了来自不同领域的嘉宾,其中包括威克郡政府Poll Center的Thomas Ray,MOVE NC的穆淑云,北卡华人联合会(CAFA)的杨建平,Karen社区农场的Jenn Sanford,Htoo Saw Ywa,登峰学园的朱墨轩等等。大家共同关注并支持青少年心理健康事业,探讨如何更好地为社区提供心理健康服务。


短暂而美好的聚会,不仅温暖了在场的每一个人,更增强了社区成员之间的支持与联结。正如WAVES执行长Lily Chen说的:“当美丽的心灵围绕着食物相聚时,奇迹发生了。” 


On September 19, 2024, UCA WAVES held a heartwarming Mid-Autumn Festival celebration luncheon in Cary, North Carolina, where more than 30 WAVES

members and supporters gathered to embrace friendship, make new connections, and enjoy delectable hometown food, including homemade mooncake, which is a Chinese baked good traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Other traditional Chinese dishes such as roast pork, salted duck, and Lo Mein were also served to celebrate this traditional Chinese festival, which symbolizes harmony and unity, with a full moon at night. 


At the event, many WAVES members, including Lily Chen, Pao-hwa Lin, Emma Niu, Fang Qi, Krystal Zhang, Yan Wu, Lily Liu, gathered together with guests and leaders in the community, such as Jianping Yang with North Carolina Chinese Federation (CAFA), Thomas Ray with Wake County Poll center, Shuyun Mu with MOVE NC, Jenn Sanford with Karen Community Farm, Htoo Saw Ywa, Moxuan Chu with Apex Learn, and many more. Through sharing a mouthwatering meal, everyone formed a deeper bond by also sharing their understanding of WAVES' missions and discussing the key issues faced by the community and future collaboration. 


This celebration luncheon, rich in tradition and culture, reminds us of the importance of unity, gratitude, and the simple pleasures of life—such as delicious mooncakes and the beauty of the full moon. Everyone left the event with a feeling of empowerment, carrying this spirit of unity and understanding forward, continuing to support one another serving the community. As WAVES Executive Director Lily Chen says, "When beautiful minds come together around food, magic happens."

Karen Community Advisory Committee Provide Feedback for Interview Questions

克伦难民社区心理健康调研面试问题反馈

UCA WAVES执行长Lily Chen在9月14日前往Oaky Grove的克伦难民社区农场,主持了一次面试问题反馈会议,有15名人参加,这个会议是北卡亚裔社区心理健康行为研究的一部分,该研究由蓝十字北卡基金会资助,WAVES和该社区农场共同负责这个调研项目。


在场的人回答了17个问题,涵盖了压力、心理健康、寻求帮助的障碍等情况,提供了非常有价值的信息和反馈。


As part of a study on mental health experiences and help-seeking behavior in the Karen community, UCA WAVES Executive Director Lily Chen conducted a feedback session on interview questions for the Karen Community Advisory Committee at the Karen community farm in Oaky Grove, attended by 15 committee members.


Lily sought input on 17 semi-structured interview questions aimed at understanding stress, mental health, barriers, and help-seeking among Karen youth and parents. The community members offered valuable feedback to enhance clarity, cultural sensitivity, relevance, and encouragement.

Outreach to Bharatiya Senior Citizen for Health Research

2024年9月7日,UCA WAVES的执行长Lily Chen,董事 Pao-Hwa Lin, 法律顾问Emma Niou参加了北卡罗来纳州印度裔长者组织(Bharatiya Senior Citizen of North Carolina)举办的特别活动。


此次活动是UCA WAVES与印度裔长者团体进行数月沟通后的线下聚会,重点讨论了亚裔及太平洋岛民(AANHPI)的健康研究,并分享了彼此在健康实践方面的经验。


Lily Chen对印度裔长者的热情款待表示衷心感谢,并在活动中表达了对这些宝贵健康实践的学习与赞赏。她特别提到看到超过200位长者在Cary市的Senior Center参与活动时感到十分温暖,这种互助为亚裔活动提供了持续的支持。


Pao-Hwa分享了最近对于亚裔心理健康研究的新发现,并欢迎更多的印度裔加入研究,为亚裔的健康做更进一步的发声。


On September 7, 2024, UCA WAVES Executive Director Lily Chen, Board member Pao-hwa Lin and Legal Counsel Emma Niou participated in a special event hosted by the Bharatiya Senior Citizen of North Carolina. This event marked the culmination of months of communication between UCA WAVES and the Indian senior group, focusing on Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) research and the exchange of health practices.


Lily expressed heartfelt thanks to the Bharatiya Senior Citizen group for their gracious invitation and the wealth of health knowledge they shared. She remarked on how heartwarming it was to see over 200 seniors coming together at the Town of Cary Senior Center, forming a supportive community.


Professor Pao-Hwa Lin shared recent findings on Asian mental health research and

welcomed more Indian participants to join the study, aiming to advance the advocacy for Asian health.

Duke Cancer Institute Community + Scientist Clinical Trials Equity Roundtable

杜克癌症研究所社区+科学家临床试验公平圆桌会议

UCA WAVES执行长陈健(Lily Chen)于9月14日参加了杜克癌症研究所社区+科学家临床试验公平圆桌会议。从2021年起,陈健一直是杜克癌症研究所社区咨询委员会(DCI)成员之一。


圆桌会议进行了深入的讨论,阐明了社区成员面临的各种障碍,如语言困难、难以找到资源、缺乏知识以及对医学界和科学界的不信任。DCI分享了他们的研究成果和少数族裔社区癌症幸存者的感人故事,以及在临床试验中加强对这些群体的服务的解决方案,令人深受启发。在会议期间,陈健还谈到了UCA WAVES如何积极地与克伦难民社区合作,成为亚裔社区健康差异研究的伙伴的。


As a member of the Duke Cancer Institute Community Advisory Committee (DCI) since 2021, UCA WAVES Executive Director Lily Chen attended the Community + Scientist Clinical Trials Equity Roundtable on Saturday, September 14th.


The roundtable featured insightful discussions that illuminated various barriers faced by community members, such as language difficulties, navigation issues, lack of knowledge, and distrust of the medical and scientific communities. It was enlightening to hear success stories from the DCI research initiative, alongside touching narratives from cancer survivors in minority communities, as well as solutions for enhancing outreach to these groups in clinical trials. During the meeting, Lily also highlighted how UCA WAVES is actively investing in the Karen refugee community as an equal partner in health disparity research.

At the end of September, UCA WAVES members had an insightful, in-depth discussion with Ms. Elaine Peng, Executive Director of the Mental Health Association for Chinese Americans (MHACC), and NC House Representative Ya Liu regarding the ways to promote mental health as well as civic engagement and participation in local Asian American community.

精神健康急救员培训月度更新

从2024年初截至9月底,共计302人已成功完成培训,恭喜他们!


So far in 2024, a total of 302 people have completed training! Congratulations !! 


UCA WAVES联合 MHACC 在2023-2024年举办了多次“精神健康急救员培训”,该培训是一门以技能为主的认证课程,由美国心理健康委员会管理。


Managed by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, this certification course equips attendees with skills to recognize and respond to crises and substance abuse symptoms. Successful participants earn a globally recognized "MHFA Certificate".


The Mental Health First Aid Training Program aims to educate community members about mental health and boost their ability to prevent or handle crises, allowing them to become "mental health guardians" for themselves and their loved ones.

2024年全国亚裔美国人、夏威夷原住民和太平洋岛民(AANHPI)团结峰会

2024 National AANHPI Unity Summit

UCA WAVES的合作组织,美国亚洲文化与教育联盟(ACAESUSA)是2024年全国AANHPI团结峰会的主办方之一。今年峰会的亮点之一是ACAESUSA在国会山举办的艺术展,展示了来自世界各地的艺术家的佳作。今年的主题是“爱之世界”。


峰会上,ACAESUSA会长,UCA WAVES成员解健在白宫发表演讲,表达了消除反亚裔仇恨的愿望,希望通过我们共同的努力,能够建立一个反对仇恨和歧视的社会。


UCA WAVES 'partner organization, the Asian Culture and Education Society USA (ACAESUSA), co-hosted the 2024 National AANHPI Unity Summit. A highlight of this year’s summit was the ACAESUSA art exhibition at Capitol Hill, showcasing artistic talent from around the world. This year’s theme is World of Love.


At the summit, Xie Jan, president of ACAESUSA and member of UCA WAVES, delivered a speech at the White House, expressing her wish to end anti-Asian hate, hoping that through our collective efforts, we can build a society against hate and discrimination.
