Margaret's Message...

It continues to be busy at Matthews House Hospice. As we look back on the impact we have had over the last year, we are honoured to have been able to provide community clients compassionate care and support in their homes as they navigate their journey of a life-limiting illness, end-of-life, or as they grieve the loss of someone special.

With over 55 community programs, including Hospice@Home, we value our ability to be there for our clients, their caregivers, families, and friends.

We wish you and your loved ones a happy holiday season!

Grief & Bereavement

Our Grief & Bereavement Program offers both individual counselling and support groups.

We know that the holiday season can be extra challenging for those who are living with the loss of a loved one.

Whether you have lost a significant person in the past year or several years ago, holiday rituals and memories can renew the pain of loss. It is hard to escape the holiday season when there are reminders all around us with decorations and holiday music. It is important to know that sadness is normal during the holidays, even if your loved one passed away many years ago.

Try to remind yourself that the intense feelings will pass but that grief is an ongoing journey that gets easier with time. The first holiday season without a loved one is especially difficult as you try to navigate the typical holiday traditions without their presence. It is important to remember that everyone grieves differently and what may be a helpful coping strategy to one person may not be helpful to another.

Remember that Matthews House Hospice is here if you need grief and bereavement support. Please call 705-435-7218 and ask to book an appointment with one of our counsellors.

Meet Cathy!

Hi, my name is Cathy Morden and I am the President of the Matthews House Hospice Board of Directors. I have been a volunteer at Matthews House for six years and because of my past experience and background on the Board of Directors of Markham Stouffville Hospital and Stevenson Memorial Hospital for nine years each, it was thought that I could bring value to our hospice.

For over twenty years, I have been inspired by the great work of so many people who have devoted their time and expertise to create this amazing palliative organization.

Just drop into our hospice and you will be greeted by wonderful, caring and compassionate staff and volunteers.

It is my absolute pleasure to lead our talented and dedicated board of directors and to work with our staff and many volunteers.

Annual Holiday Giving Campaign

This holiday season, we kindly ask you to consider giving the gift of compassionate care in our community.

Our Hospice@Home Program is instrumental in enhancing our clients and their families quality of life while navigating a life-limiting illness at home. Last year, we provided 1,834 home visits to our clients and 4,181 hours of support. Our PSWs assist with personal care, light housekeeping, meal preparation, as well as provide a listening ear and friendly companionship. Hospice@Home also provides caregivers much needed relief by opening up valuable time for themselves and time to assist their loved ones care needs.

Day Of Care

The Story Behind A Day of Care

A “Day of Care” is a way to honour and remember your loved ones and a wonderful gift to give to your community. You can recognize a birthday, anniversary, a day of passing, or any day that is special to you.

When a Day of Care is purchased, we display a certificate in our lobby and share on our social media.
