It has been a busy time here at Matthews House Hospice. The number of visits by our PSWs to clients in the community continues to increase each month. This increase demonstrates the need people in the community have to help keep their loved ones in their home rather than place them in a nursing home.
Also in this same way, we opened our Memory Care & Dementia Day Program in June. Our Memory Care & Dementia Day Program could not be possible without the donations from our community.
Your continued support is outstanding and deeply appreciated. Recently, your generous support allowed staff to care for a 2-day old baby for 10 days. Although it was very sad, that baby had outstanding care in a quiet, warm, and caring environment.
Thank you for continuing to support Matthews House Hospice.

Memory Care & Dementia Day Program
The Memory Care and Dementia Day Program launched on Monday June 5th, 2023. The overall goal of the Day Program is to provide a supervised place for socialization and stimulation for clients with mild to moderate dementia. The program also provides support for caregivers by allowing them to have time to themselves while their loved one is attending that day. Our participant numbers continue to grow and we have received wonderful feedback from our clients and caregivers.
We have three amazing staff members that facilitate the Day Program. Beckie Duncan is our Day Program PSW and supports clients with their personal care needs and helps to create a welcoming and engaging environment for clients. Roberta McLoughlin is our Recreational Therapist who develops the activities for the program and makes sure that the clients have input into these activities. Erynn Atkin is our RPN who completes the intake for new clients and provides safe administration of medications.
We are currently accepting new clients for the Day Program. If you know someone who may benefit from our day program, they can call Erynn Atkin at 705-435-7218 ext. 225.

Making Potato Heads to celebrate Alliston Potato Festival! | |
Hi, my name is Sheena Klaassen. My husband Hans and I moved to Alliston in August 2017 to be closer to our daughter and grandchildren. After our son passed away from cancer, I became a volunteer with Bereaved Families of Halton Peel. I had taken time off from volunteering before we moved.
The winter of 2018 I met a Matthews House Hospice (MHH) staff member at the Alliston Home Show, after speaking with her I decided that this was somewhere I would like to volunteer. I started my training that April and my first shift was as a greeter in the front lobby of this beautiful new building. In 2019, I began co-facilitating the drop-in Grieving Parents Group with my wonderful co-facilitator Linda S. Linda and I have facilitated several closed 8-week groups for MHH clients over the past few years. During Covid, we switched to doing a group on Zoom.
In the winter of 2019, there was a course for Therapeutic Touch offered at MHH. I took the course and I was hooked. Since then, I have finished my level 3 and continue to take courses to improve my skills. I love being able to offer this wonderful treatment to our residents and guests, when I am at MHH on Friday mornings.
Volunteering has given me a wonderful opportunity of meeting new people and a feeling of satisfaction in what I am doing.

Family Tree
"Our family tree in fingerprints. I was the last person to add my fingerprint. My Nonno had asked if everyone had added their mark to the tree, to which my family said, 'No, we're just missing Elena.' He waited for me. I was so happy to show him the canvas once I put my print down. He always put his family first... Thank you, Matthews House Hospice, for having such supportive and kind nurses around the clock. Our family is so appreciative of everything"
- Elena, Resident Salvatore's Granddaughter

Evening to Remember
In June, we enjoyed a beautiful evening of poetry, music, and memories as we came together to honour and remember our loved ones.
Throughout the evening, our guests shared meaningful and touching stories of their loved ones, connected with other families, and lit memorial candles together.
