California’s MENA Inclusion Act (AB 91) marks an important step toward ensuring Middle Eastern and North African communities are accurately represented in demographic data.
The law recognizes Afghan, Iranian, Iraqi, Israeli, Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian, Turkish, Yemeni, North African, and other MENA and transnational heritage communities.
Beginning January 1, 2028, state and local agencies must collect disaggregated MENA demographic data, with reporting beginning in 2029.
Accurate data can help identify disparities and support more equitable resources, language access, healthcare, education, civil rights, and community services.
The MENA American Policy Summit comes at an important time as California moves toward implementing this landmark legislation.
