Growing Greener
I am excited to share some fantastic news that will make our beautiful city even greener and more vibrant. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service has awarded the City of Port St. Lucie a $1 million grant to bolster our urban forestry initiatives. This grant is part of a nationwide investment of $1 billion in the Forest Service's Urban and Community Forestry Program.
Over the next four years, these funds will be utilized to expand our urban forestry program by planting trees along transportation corridors and at strategic locations to increase our urban canopy coverage. This project will help reduce carbon emissions, enhance the pedestrian experience, improve public safety, and provide other valuable benefits.
At last year's #IAMPSL Citizen Summit, residents voiced one of their most prominent concerns: the desire for greater access to natural and preserved areas. Through this grant, we are eager to plant an unprecedented number of trees, extend our urban canopy, and elevate the well-being of our city.
The grant will specifically target areas in need of a more extensive tree canopy, offering a multitude of advantages such as improved air and water quality, lower temperatures, and safer streets. Additionally, we will collaborate with the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County to engage and educate our youth in the maintenance of our tree canopy.

What Works Cities representatives visit City Hall as Port St. Lucie is Considered for Certification
The City of Port St. Lucie is taking part in the certification from What Works Cities, a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to evolve into a data-informed and high-performing government organization.
This prestigious certification program, initiated in 2017 through the visionary support of Bloomberg Philanthropies and meticulously orchestrated by Results for America, has set an international benchmark for excellence in data-driven and well-managed local government. It evaluates how effectively cities are governed by assessing the extent to which data and evidence are integrated into decision-making processes. This remarkable recognition program celebrates those local governments that have harnessed the power of data to inform policy decisions, allocate resources, enhance services, evaluate program effectiveness, and foster engagement with our valued residents.
Our journey towards certification reached a pivotal moment recently as we welcomed the esteemed representatives of What Works Cities to Port St. Lucie. During this visit, our exceptional Leadership Team had the privilege of engaging with Lauren Su, Director of Certification at What Works Cities, and Nana Osei, Community and Implementation Manager at Results for America. This session, held at City Hall, included an overview of the certification process, outlining its purpose and objectives. We also had the opportunity to discuss why our city prioritizes data and evidence and how this strategic commitment has proven instrumental in elevating our government's efficiency, enabling us to better serve our residents and achieve remarkable outcomes.
