April 2021
Dear Friends,
April is always a festive time of year at your local feminist bookstore as we celebrate National Poetry Month and Independent Bookstore Day! With the recent closure of two beloved Chicago indies, City Lit and the original location of Volumes BookCafe, we are once again reminded to invest in the small, independent businesses that have shaped our lives and that we want to shape our future.

Indie Bookstores are fighting back against one of the biggest threats to our existence: Amazon. Following the lead of our friends at Bookends & Beginnings, we've signed onto the lawsuit against Amazon's price-fixing practices. With this action, we express our solidarity with union workers in Bessemer, Alabama, and their fight for better workplace conditions, and we take a stand against the online giant's devastating impact upon the publishing industry.

Celebrate National Poetry Month by discovering new and familiar voices on our expertly curated list of poetry recommendations, some of which will publish later this year. Remember, placing a preorder is a great way to support the books, authors, and bookstores you love!

In solidarity,

P.S. We've heard that some email providers "clip" our newsletter. Be sure to click "view entire message" at the bottom of your screen so you don't miss any upcoming events.
While we deeply appreciate the surge in sales for books by Asian American and Pacific Island authors, we know that diverse book lists alone will not end racism. Beyond expanding your reading lists, we ask that you throw your support behind AAPI owned bookstores
and donate to social justice organizations like Stop AAPI Hate,
Asian Americans Advancing Justice, and others who have been working to protect the AAPI community long before the
tragic headlines.
Chicago Books to
Women in Prison Bundle
In March we launched a new collaboration with Chicago Books to Women in Prison! Every quarter we will be offering a special 3-book bundle that will help CBWP fill more of the requests they get from women and trans people in prisons across the country. For this first quarter, we've selected THESE three books with ties to Women's History. Watch for information about future bundles and other ways to help CBWP get more good reading in the hands of people in prison.
