Summer is here! We're looking forward to the longer days, warmer weather, and hopefully some great water conditions this season - leading to great fishing days and selling fish right off the boat. Read on for more details on how the Trust can help support you in your dock sale efforts, meetings to keep on your radar, and more.

Upcoming PFMC, OPC, and FGC Meetings

There are several important meetings coming up in June to take note of.

Off the Boat Sales - let's get those fish sold!

As summer approaches, the crowds will be flocking to the coast in search of fresh seafood off the docks! If you are planning on doing dock sales, please let us know and we can help spread the word. MBFT can promote your off the boat sales online through email campaigns and our social channels to make sure more people know where and when to find you! Ocean Strategies Special Report:

Supporting American Seafood

Ocean Strategies recently released a report analyzing potential budget cuts to essential NOAA/NMFS services; how they impact fisheries, seafood business, and American wellbeing; and how stakeholders can provide input on next steps. Included in the report is:

MREP 2025

The Marine Resource Education Program (MREP) is run by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, but don’t let that make you think it’s only about the east coast. GMRI runs regionally-based workshops across the US annually.

It’s funded by NOAA and the curriculum and speakers are designed ‘by fishermen, for fishermen’ with the goal of empowering fishery participants to better understand and engage in fisheries management at the federal level. All expenses are paid, and MBFT provides a limited number of scholarships to help cover your time.

The 2025 west coast workshop will be held in La Jolla, CA, from October 6-10th, and applications are open now! For more details, check out [link]. MBFT scholarship applications will open later this year (you must be accepted to MREP before applying for an MBFT scholarship).

MBFT Activity Roundup

In May, we continued fundraising for the Community Seafood Program (CSP) and firmed up more ‘ Get Hooked’ Dinners to educate the public about local seafood and further raise funds for seafood donations. We continued outreach and funding efforts to emphasize the urgent need for infrastructure support across all harbors. Highlights include attending the Moss Landing Harbor District meeting and receiving a letter of support, attending City of Monterey council meetings discussing infrastructure cost challenges to Wharf 2, as well as approaching the County of Monterey for funding for our Future of Blue initiative—a community-driven effort to revitalize our working waterfronts. Lastly, we’re working to reschedule a meeting with Congressman Panetta so he can hear directly from local fishermen. Stay tuned for updates, and let us know if you'd like to take part in that conversation.
