Monterey's Deteriorating Wharves:

A Concern for Public Safety

The Monterey County Civil Grand Jury found that the City of Monterey has neglected to restore the integrity of its wharves for at least seven years. Several structural elements remain in disrepair despite spending significant tax dollars on at least five reports. The structural deterioration of the Wharves worsens with each passing storm. The City of Monterey will be visiting this topic at their upcoming Council meetings on May 6th and May 20th. Read the Report.

What is the Trust up to?

What We’re Working On

We occasionally hear from community members asking, “What are you working on? I don’t see you down at the docks.” While we can’t be everywhere at once across such a large and diverse bay, we want to share a few current efforts we’re leading behind the scenes.

We’re actively tracking state and federal policy developments that affect West Coast fisheries and seafood markets, and engaging with Monterey County’s Economic Development Office to ensure the fishing industry remains a central part of the region’s planning.

This month, we’ve also been preparing for an upcoming meeting with Congressman Jimmy Panetta—rescheduled for June—which will offer local fishing representatives a direct opportunity to share the challenges they’re facing. In addition, we’re in ongoing conversations with Assemblymember Dawn Addis and the Monterey County Board of Supervisors about our Future of Blue initiative—a new effort to secure funding and create a long-term plan for improving infrastructure across the three Monterey Bay harbors.

We’re also continuing our regular promotion of local seafood suppliers, dock sales, and restaurants through our digital channels. And most importantly, we want to hear from you. Please stay in touch, ask questions, and let us know how we can better support you and others working in the region’s fishing community.
