2023 Salmon Disaster Relief Update

The 2023 salmon disaster contract from NOAA was signed by PSMFC on January 8, allowing them to begin fund distribution. The CDFW is providing information on eligible fishermen and buyers to Pacific States, who will send forms for review and signature. A deadline will be set for returning the forms, after which approved parties will receive checks. While the exact timeline for deadlines and check distribution is unclear, the process is expected to take several months. Efforts are underway to ensure the funds are disbursed as quickly as possible.

New Report Out:

A Transition to a Low Carbon Fishing Fleet

Researchers in the U.S. commercial fishing industry joined forces with the Fishery Friendly Climate Action Campaign to establish an evidence-based framework for fishing industry-led advocacy aimed at fostering a transition to a low-carbon fishing fleet.

They engaged with stakeholders and experts including fishing vessel owners, port managers, funding intermediaries experienced in vessel energy improvements, and administrators of state and federal programs supporting vessel energy efficiency.

Most critically, they asked fishermen: What new or improved programs would you like to see implemented to ensure a safe, affordable, equitable, and practical transition to a low-carbon fishing fleet?
