Panetta Meeting Recap

On July 30th, several fishermen met with U.S. congressional representative Jimmy Panetta to discuss challenges facing the fleet. Mr. Panetta sought input from the group on issues affecting the region’s fishing industry and community. Key concerns raised include the loss of salmon locally for markets, and inadequacy of 2023 salmon disaster payments, leading to significant business losses and concerns about local knowledge and food sovereignty for those who rely on salmon. A question was raised regarding the consolidation of disaster relief processes for 2024-25, which his team could examine.
