Building Stability for the Next Generation

When Erica (name changed for privacy) found out she was pregnant, she was already living in a women’s shelter without stable housing, a difficult and scary situation to be in alone. At just 21 years old, she had recently secured a rapid rehousing unit, but her baby was due months before the move-in date.

Fortunately, Erica was able to connect with the ARISE program at HopePHL. The program helped her access a housing unit more quickly, giving her a safe and stable place to live before welcoming her first child.

Within two weeks of moving into the ARISE program, Erica gave birth. With the support of the program, she was able to remain in the unit for three months, time that proved invaluable as she adjusted to caring for a newborn while preparing for the next step toward long-term stability.

During those months, Erica continued working with the rapid rehousing program to finalize her housing. When her unit became available, the transition was seamless. With a new baby and a secure home, Erica was able to move forward with confidence.

Stories like Erica’s highlight the importance of programs designed specifically for young adults navigating housing instability. Many individuals between the ages of 18 and 24 often find themselves overlooked by traditional support systems. and may struggle to find stable housing, employment, and other critical resources.

Programs like ARISE exist to help fill that gap. By providing temporary housing and supportive services, HopePHL helps young adults build stability and confidence as they take the next steps in their lives. For Erica, that support meant more than just a place to stay, it meant starting her journey into parenthood with safety, stability, and hope.

A New Chapter for North 40th Street

A lengthy stretch of North 40th Street in West Philadelphia has been transformed with the completion of the North 40th Street Corridor Revitalization Project. The new housing development, Apartments at 40th Street Place, brings 40 units of affordable rental housing to the crossroads of Mantua, Belmont, and East Parkside; three neighborhoods that are experiencing rapid change and growing demand for stable, affordable homes.

This milestone project represents a partnership between the Mt. Vernon Manor Community Development Corporation (MVMCDC) and HopePHL. By combining our long-standing commitment to community development, we're thrilled join forces to demonstrate how collaborative efforts can help advance equitable growth while keeping neighborhood residents in mind.

Community members, public officials, and project supporters recently gathered to celebrate the completion of the development at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event brought together neighbors, government partners, and funders to mark the transformation of the corridor and highlight the continued need for affordable housing in West Philadelphia.

Guests heard brief remarks from speakers including Senator Vincent Hughes, Senior Advisor to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Region 3, Elvis Solivan, MVMCDC Executive Director Michael Thorpe, and HopePHL President Kathy Desmond. Their comments emphasized the importance of partnerships and investment in community-led development.

The celebration concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony outside one of the new buildings, followed by tours of the residential units. Inside, visitors gathered in the building’s community room which was designed to be a welcoming space to bring neighbors together.

The North 40th Street Corridor Revitalization Project stands as a powerful example of how collaborative, community-driven development can turn under-utilized spaces into opportunities for stability, growth, and affordable housing for Philadelphia residents.

Expanding Digital Learning in West Philadelphia

Located at 3939 Warren Street, just a block from Lancaster Avenue near 40th Street, the Maynes Digital Learning Lab offers a welcoming space where community members can strengthen their confidence with technology.

The space provides a free public computer lab Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., giving neighbors access to desktop computers, Wi-Fi, and one-on-one assistance.

Staff members Nathan Kuruna and Nasair Augustin are available to help visitors navigate the digital world—from setting up email accounts and browsing the internet safely to using widely used programs such as Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and Adobe Creative Cloud. The team also assists with practical needs such as creating resumes, completing online job applications, and accessing benefits and services that are increasingly managed online.

For adults looking to deepen their skills, the lab hosts basic computer classes every Monday and Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. These sessions cover topics such as email basics, internet safety, and common digital tools, while also highlighting practical uses like accessing telehealth services. Many participants return regularly, sharing that the classes not only build digital skills but also offer social connection and a way to keep their minds engaged.

HopePHL’s commitment to digital learning also extends to young people across West Philadelphia. This year, the team expanded its afterschool programming to a third school, adding James Rhoades Elementary School to existing programs at Martha Washington Elementary School and Alain Locke Elementary School.

Students in grades 4 and 5 explore 3D design and printing, while younger students in kindergarten through third grade learn the basics of digital illustration and media creation. These programs introduce children to creative and technical skills that can spark long-term interest in STEM fields.

Older youth also have the opportunity to experience a unique feature of the lab where they can earn real flight hours using a flight simulator donated by the Tuskegee Airmen Philadelphia Chapter! This year, eleven students completed the simulator’s introductory training course and received their wing pins in a special recognition from pilots in the Roscoe Draper Chapter of the Black Pilots of America.

Through programs like the Maynes Digital Learning Lab, HopePHL continues to expand access to technology, helping West Philadelphia residents of all ages build the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
