A New Way to Buy Books

July 2023

Summer Buzz

The Library is buzzing with people of all ages and lots of excitement about the Summer Reading Program. There are so many great programs for all interests and ages in the next two months. Be sure to check out the July and August calendar of events, which includes live concerts, a magic show, book clubs for varying ages, mosaic making, and reading to Rico, the Sudbury Police Department’s service dog. The perennial favorite Truck Day is on Wednesday, July 12, and the Goodnow Library Foundation’s Book Nook is happy to sponsor the trackless train. Hope to see you this summer!

That's a Wrap!

Our spring author series celebrated two debut authors and one well-established author. The three diverse events were incredibly inspirational and full of feel-good stories.

Jarrett Krosoczka, the New York Times bestselling author/illustrator behind more than forty books for young readers, including the popular Lunch Lady series, visited in May as an early kick off to the Library’s Summer Reading Program—and he met his biggest fan.

Sami Greenfield’s ultimate joy burst was launching Bury Me in My Bathing Suit to a packed crowd at the Library in May, and she had everyone laughing as she shared her stories on grief, love, infertility, fear, and gratitude.

And at the end of June, Jean Duffy was joined by Beka Ntanwisi, who was visiting from South Africa for a three-day book tour to kick off the launch of Soccer Grannies: The South African Women Who Inspire the World.

Stay tuned for future author events!

A New Way to Buy Books

bookshop.org

The GLF's Book Nook just added another way to buy books and support the Goodnow Library at the same time. You can now purchase new books through bookshop.org, an amazing website with a huge selection of books in many genres.

Bookshop.org began in 2020 with a mission to help independent book stores thrive, with over 80 percent of the profit margin going back to the partner bookshops.

Head over to bookshop.org, click on "Choose a Bookstore," type in Goodnow Book Nook (or put in 01776 and it will pop up), and start shopping! Every time you buy a book, the profits go to the Goodnow Library. The Book Nook is continuing to offer used books for sale in the Library, online, and at the two in-person book sales (March and November).

Be Bold is Back!

We’re busy planning the topics and fall schedule for our annual Be Bold series, which will focus on parenting through the years—from parenting young kids to older parents. There will be 3–4 events, from September–January. If you have suggestions for future events, please let us know so we can continue to offer more programs that our community would like to have! Drop us a note: info@goodnowlibraryfoundation.org.

Museum Pass of the Month:

Zoo New England

Zoo New England operates Franklin Park Zoo, a 72-acre site nestled in Boston’s historic Franklin Park, and the Stone Zoo, located on a 26-acre site near Spot Pond reservoir in Stoneham, MA. In addition to animals, both zoos are engaged in wildlife and conservation programs, research, and education.

The Goodnow Library Foundation funds the museum pass program at the library, which provides discounted rates at many local museums and attractions in the region. Passes can be reserved up to eight weeks before the date of use.

The Zoo New England pass allows up to six tickets: $9.00 adult tickets and $6.00 child tickets.

Library Card Freebies

Having a Goodnow Library card gives you access to lots of free things, including Cypress Resume, which allows you to effortlessly create professional resumes in minutes. Resumes need to grab the attention of an employer almost immediately in order to have the best chance of making it through the weeding process. Cypress Resume’s gigantic library of tens of thousands of professional statements are designed to do exactly that. The database covers virtually all professions, grouping job types by core tasks. Users simply type basic information about themselves and Cypress writes concise, descriptive statements detailing abilities. Sudbury residents only.

Get to Know the Library Staff

Meet Amy Stimac, head of Children’s Services at the Goodnow Library, where she has been working for 11 years!

I loved to read as a child and my mother would take me every week to the Columbus Metropolitan Library in my hometown of Columbus, Ohio. I loved that place so much because there was a large tree in the center of the children's room (not real, of course) that you could climb and then find a place in the branches to sit and read. I loved that tree! Both of my parents were big library lovers, and I spent countless hours in libraries. I want every child to fall in love with their local library the way I fell in love with mine.

Favorite children’s book: Anne of Green Gables

Most memorable experience in the Children’s area: The lunch hour I spent eating outside on the patio only to stand up and realize that I had been sitting two feet away from a snoozing skunk the whole time!

Coming up: Truck Day is July 12, 10am–1pm. It's one of my most favorite days of the year. Seeing the kids riding the trackless train is a highlight!

The Goodnow Library Foundation is the only nonprofit organization committed solely to supporting the Goodnow Library’s priorities through fundraising and advocacy, providing an extra margin of excellence. The Foundation offers an additional source of support for the Library’s growing needs—such as programs for all ages, technology upgrades, capital improvements, expanded digital collections, museum passes, and much more—that are not funded by the state or town.
