Winter Wellness: Supporting Seniors

Through the Coldest Months!

As we enter the heart of winter, many families begin to notice changes in the health and safety of their loved ones. Colder weather, seasonal illness, and limited mobility can quickly turn everyday routines into urgent concerns. This time of year is often the busiest for senior care decisions, and it’s also when families need the most support.

At BESTEMOR, we are here to help you navigate these moments with calm, clarity, and compassion. Whether your loved one has experienced a recent hospitalization, a sudden decline in health, or growing safety concerns at home, our advisors are ready to guide you through the options and connect you with the right level of care.

This New Year, you don’t have to face these challenges alone. Our team works quickly and thoughtfully to ensure families receive trusted recommendations, vetted community options, and steady support during one of the most vulnerable seasons of the year. Let us walk with you as you protect the people who matter most.

A Holiday Reflection From Julie Hvitfeldtsen, President & Senior Advisor

As the holiday season comes to a close, I hope you and your loved ones enjoyed a beautiful and meaningful Christmas. This time of year is a special reminder of the importance of family, reflection, and gratitude.

I’ve shared a photo of one of my favorite Christmas tree decorations with you, a small but heartfelt symbol of the joy and memories this season holds. For me, it represents togetherness, tradition, and the comfort of home the very things we strive to protect for every family we serve.

As we step into the New Year, please know how thankful I am for the trust you place in BESTEMOR. It is truly an honor to walk alongside families during such important moments, and I look forward to continuing this journey with you in the year ahead.

Wishing you peace, health, and hope in 2026.

For many families, talking about senior care feels uncomfortable. It can be emotional, uncertain, and easy to postpone. Yet the reality is that waiting until a crisis often makes decisions feel rushed, stressful, and overwhelming.

Winter especially has a way of revealing when extra support may be needed. A fall, a hospital stay, or a sudden change in health can turn a quiet concern into an urgent situation overnight. When conversations haven’t happened ahead of time, families are left scrambling to make choices without knowing their loved one’s wishes.

Starting the conversation early creates space for understanding, respect, and shared decision-making. It allows your loved one to express what matters most to them - whether that’s staying close to family, remaining independent as long as possible, or feeling safe and socially connected.

At BESTEMOR, we see the relief that comes when families take this first step before an emergency arises. Thoughtful planning leads to smoother transitions, clearer expectations, and far greater peace of mind.

If you’re unsure how to begin, you don’t have to do it alone. Our team is here to listen, guide, and help you explore options at your own pace - so when change comes, your family is prepared with confidence and care.

Ask the Advisors: Your Senior Care Questions Answered!

Each month, the BESTEMOR Senior Solutions Advisor Team answers one of the most common questions families ask as they navigate senior care decisions. Our goal is to provide clarity, compassion, and practical guidance, right when you need it most.

This Month’s Question:

What is the difference between

independent living, assisted living, and memory care?

Our Answer:

Understanding the different types of senior living can feel overwhelming, especially when everything sounds similar. The key difference is the level of support provided.

  • Independent Living is designed for seniors who are active and able to manage daily life on their own but want a maintenance-free lifestyle, social activities, and community living.
  • Assisted Living offers personal care support such as help with bathing, dressing, medication management, and daily routines while still encouraging independence.
  • Memory Care provides specialized care for individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, including secured environments, structured routines, and staff trained in cognitive support.

Our Advice:

Choosing the right level of care is about matching your loved one’s current needs — not just today, but also planning for what the future may require. The earlier families understand these options, the easier it becomes to make confident, informed decisions.

If you’re unsure which path is right for your loved one, the BESTEMOR Advisor Team is here to guide you every step of the way.
