Dear Friends of Headwaters,
Even though poetry is one of the least popular art forms in our hyperactive contemporary culture, it has become a tradition for me to offer our community a poem as we enter a new year. Poetry, and this poem, in particular, slows me down and helps me accept and even celebrate my shortcomings and “smallness” in the vastness of the universe. “In Any Event,” and the students’ reading of it, conjures an evening of stargazing and invokes feelings of wonder and awe. As we begin 2025, I intend to do so while remembering that I, too, am “fractured/like stars/bred to shine.” I hope you enjoy the video and have experienced wonder and maybe awe over the break. On behalf of my remarkable colleagues and friends at Headwaters, we look forward to reconnecting in just a few days.
