A New Year - A True Story

Two AA members were outside waiting for their meeting to start when a newcomer walked up with a paper in his hand and said, "Is this where those AA classes are?"
"Yes, the meeting is inside," one of the men replied.
The newcomer then help his paper up and proclaimed, "I have to go to 10 of these classes!"
The older member assured him, "They will sign your paper for you after the meeting."
"So, how many of these classes do you have to go to?' the newcomer asked him.
"Well, I need to go the rest of my life!" the old-timer answered.
Shocked, the new guy blurted out. "Oh man! What did you do?"

Thinking about Step Twelve

"Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs."

Step 12: Around the tables, when we talk about the Twelfth Step, more often than not it is in terms of twelfth-stepping-that is, helping newcomers to AA. Naturally, some attention is focused on the other aspects of the Step, namely, the spiritual awakening and the practice of AA principles in all our affairs. The question is do we go into those aspects as deeply as we should?

Working with other alcoholics, time after time, helps provide immunity from drinking. This is the part of "spiritual awakening" mentioned in the Step. How does an AA member recognize he/she has had a "spiritual awakening"? This person has now become able to do, feel, and believe that which he could not do before on his unaided strength of resources alone, "Twelve and Twelve" says.
