Safe Routes to School
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a program from the U.S. Department of Transportation. It supports making walking and biking to school safer for students. South Euclid–Lyndhurst Schools are doing a study as part of this program to help our students walk and bike to school more safely and easily.
The District is asking for ideas from students, parents, and the community. This feedback will help make the best changes possible. When students can walk or bike safely, it helps their bodies and minds stay healthy.
The plan follows the “Six E’s” of SRTS:
- Engineering
- Education
- Encouragement
- Enforcement
- Evaluation, and
- Equity
These can include better sidewalks and crossings, teaching safety skills, encouraging walking and biking, using tools like crossing guards, and making sure everyone’s travel and safety needs are met. The results of your input and the data collection will result in a School Travel Plan that will be used to seek out funding sources for implementation.
More updates are coming soon! A Caregiver/Parent Survey will be sent out next week to learn about your concerns and ideas for walking and biking in the community. Please take part and share your thoughts. The School Travel Plan should be finished by early summer.
