A NOTE FROM FR. VINCE

Hello everybody!

We will be celebrating evening mass tonight at 7 p.m. We are live-streaming tonight and then the 10 a.m. mass every Sunday. It is accessed in the same way the taped masses were: website link , our Facebook page, and our YouTube channel .

I of course will be visiting in the coming weeks with Bishop Joensen who will inform me on his decision regarding pastoral leadership here at St. Augustin. That will send me packing back to retirement. I can’t tell you more than that because I don’t know anything else. Apparently, it is above my pay grade!

I live 2 blocks from the largest Hy-Vee in their chain in Waukee. I bring it up because I am gauging what is happening with masks. That area has a zillion young families and less than average senior population. It gives me mixed messages: ‘boy am I old’, and ‘l like hanging around younger adults’. The workers still wear masks along with my age group, but younger people apparently assume that they don’t get very sick with this and throw caution to the wind. So I’m standing by the bananas and I’m trying to get that plastic bag open. We used to lick our fingers so we can get it open. With Covid, we can’t lick our fingers. But I am jealous because every young adult comes right up to the bananas and lick their fingers to open the bag. All this means is that I haven’t bought bananas since March because I can’t get the bag open! Last week this masked worker who looked about 15 looked at me and said, ‘you don’t need a bag for bananas, just throw them in your cart’. Under his breath he was thinking that he never wants to get old. Why the bananas story? Because our parish is continuing to take the pulse of the community and church to figure out what our mask policy is. For now, we want everyone to wear one out of caution for kids and seniors like me. We’ll see where it leads over the weeks. We are praying that some sense of normalcy will return some day. Bananas are optional!

PRAYER OF ST. AUGUSTIN
O God of what is true,
Grant us the joys of the life to come
So that our happiness may be fully
Connected to Your great promises.
In the meantime,
Let our minds dwell on that meaning,
Our tongues speak of it,
Our hearts desire for it,
Our mouths pronounce it,
Our souls hunger for it,
Our body thirst for it,
And our entire being search for it,
Until we enter through death
to Glory of the Risen Lord.
FOREVER! AMEN! ALLELUIA!
