Look for Revival of Charitable IRA Rule
by Anne Tergeson

Congress ended the week poised to revive a popular tax provision that encourages charitable donations of individual-retirement-account assets.

The Charitable IRA rollover provision, which expired at the end of 2013, allowed IRA owners and IRA beneficiaries 70 1/2 or older to donate up to $100,000 in IRA assets to charity without reporting the withdrawal as taxable income. Experts expect Congress to revive the provision, as it has several times in recent years.

Dear Friends,

As 2014 comes to an end I want to say 'Thank You!' for your support of the epilepsy community. I appreciate your keeping in touch and spreading the word in order to decrease the stigma of epilepsy. Few people know that:

  • One in 26 of us will develop epilepsy in our lifetime.

  • Nearly 3 million Americans currently live with epilepsy, making it the fourth most common neurological condition in the United States and more prevalent than cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and autism-combined!

  • More than 140,000 people in Northern California are living with epilepsy.

  • Thousands of individuals die from seizures every year.

  • No current seizure options exist for one-third of people living with epilepsy.

Fear and lack of knowledge impact everyone with epilepsy. We challenge ourselves and everyone we know to learn more about epilepsy and to make sure that everyone can perform seizure first aid.

In 2014 EFNC trained 192 school nurses plus 600 other school personnel. Our Young Adult Leadership Council established a Seizure First Aid Certification Program and certified more than 300 people. We conducted trainings in more than 26 cities and conducted the first-ever 'Living with Epilepsy' program in the Central Valley-including Spanish translation. We added 20 new members to our Professional Advisory board and recruited three new board members. I could go on, but I will make a more complete report in our January newsletter.

We're fortunate to have world class physicians and epilepsy researchers here in Northern California-but they can't succeed without our help, there is more work to do. Can you help us make 2015 even more successful?
