About the Artist
Chris Lattanzio, working from his Dallas based studio, invented a bold new style of low relief sculpture called 3-D Line Sculpture in 1998. IN 2003, partly as a political protest to the drum beats of war- Lattanzio began his white period and exhibited only white pieces until 2008. The works shown at Goodrich gallery will draw from this time period and feature cityscapes of Dallas (you may have seen one of the Majestic Theater inside the lobby of the Majestic- now in Music Hall/Fair Park), as well as New Mexico buildings of Taos and Santa Fe, along with other works from 2003 to current date.
Chris discovers his subjects through the viewfinder of his camera. He captures the subject in film, reduces the image to a line drawing utilizing computer algorithms, sketches the lines in ink, and then applies the lines to flat surfaces which are carved out leaving only raised 3-d lines and negative space. Somewhere in this inspired and intricate process, an altogether new form emerges. Ultimately, the depth and complexity of the lines inform the exchange of shadow and light.
Holding a B.B.A in Economics (minor in International Business and Information Systems) from Baylor University, and also educated at the prestigious New York University Film School, Chris has a truly extraordinary understanding of culture and distinctive perspective of the world that influences every aspect of his own work and life in art.
As an artist, Chris has turned his experience into something quite distinguished. One of his pieces, "Spirit of the Downhill Skier", was an Official Selection of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games and will be on display at the Goodrich gallery- (Jack Scharr- American Sport Art Museum - jscharr@fineartlimited.com and representative for USOC art works- is contact for Olympic information) You can see another new piece at SMU inside the entrance of the School of Education (Dean David Chard - dchard@mail.smu.edu). This past May, Lattanzio placed Yellow Rose, a free standing outdoor work, in James Surls' memorial garden down in Maalokoff Texas. This and many more art works, videos and information can be viewed at www.chrislattanzio.com.
