Jesus knows us better...
Happy Holy Tuesday! Our Gospel of the day takes place right after the washing of the feet, in the Gospel of John. Jesus speaks about being betrayed by one of the twelve, and at the end Jesus predicts that Peter will deny Him. As the story unfolds Peter denied Christ three times, as Jesus had predicted, even though Peter had pledged to die for Christ. Peter overestimated his own courage and let Jesus down. Jesus would forgive Peter, but Peter would first need to muster within himself the courage to seek forgiveness. After Christ’s Resurrection, Peter literally leaped out of a boat to greet Jesus on the shore! He was that eager for reconciliation.
With today’s Gospel passage, Jesus clearly knew Peter better than Peter knew himself. Jesus knows us better than we know ourselves. He loves us and He knows us well. On this day, as we reflect on the Lord’s final moments before carrying the cross, how are we doing in growing in self-awareness? How well do we know ourselves? The more I grow in self-awareness, the more I realize how much I need a Savior. I certainly overestimated myself in a lot of areas and underestimated myself at times. Maybe you are like me in that, as I grow in self-knowledge, gratitude for Christ increases.
If today is a day where you learn something about yourself, Jesus is there to help and to celebrate. Jesus is there to love us, forgive us, and restore us, so we can please Him in all that we do and love Him with our whole heart. God bless and stay safe!
