He must increase, I must decrease
This weekend as we get ready to celebrate the conclusion of the Christmas Season with the Baptism of the Lord, we hear about John the Baptist in our Gospel reading for the day. We read that John the Baptist’s life was not all about himself. His life, his ministry was about leading others to Jesus. “Behold the Lamb of God,” as he said to two of his disciples in John 1:36
, and they then followed Jesus. We hear at the end of the Gospel today, “So this joy of mine has been made complete. He must increase; I must decrease.” Saint John the Baptist certainly allowed Christ to increase in his life by giving himself over to Jesus.
I once read that “He must increase, I must decrease” was the motto of John the Baptist’s life. If you are looking for a motto, “He must increase, I must decrease,” is a pretty good one, and I'm sure Saint John the Baptist would not mind if you borrowed it too, because he wants Jesus to increase more and more in our life. Maybe that is something we can do more throughout this new year, and that is to allow Christ even more deeply into our life. If you are still looking for a resolution for 2021, could making more time for Christ in prayer, in service and reading be it? The more we allow Jesus to increase in our life, the more we experience fulfillment. We echo Saint John the Baptist’s words, “this joy of mine has been made complete!” God bless and stay safe!
