It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of W. James “Jim” Johnston earlier this morning, surrounded by his loved ones in the comfort of his home.

Jim was a cornerstone of Idaho REALTORS®, a tireless advocate, and a trusted mentor whose impact will be felt for generations. His career, spanning over 50 years, was marked by an unparalleled commitment to the real estate profession and a legacy of service, leadership, and generosity.

The following is a special message from Idaho REALTORS® President Katrina Wehr in honor of Idaho’s own “Godfather of RPAC”: “Jim’s knowledge, deep compassion, and steadfast belief in the transformative power of human connection left a lasting imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He possessed a rare gift for uniting people, approaching every challenge with insight, empathy, and a resolute commitment to fostering understanding and solutions. His cherished mantra, ‘It’s going to be a great day,’ was far more than a simple phrase—it embodied his unwavering optimism and his dedication to living each moment with purpose and hope.

As we grieve the profound loss of a beloved friend and colleague, we also honor the extraordinary life he lived. Jim’s influence extended far beyond the profession he was so passionate about; he touched hearts, inspired minds, and left a legacy of connection and kindness that will continue to guide us. Though his absence leaves a void that feels insurmountable, the foundation he built through his generosity and vision challenges us to carry his torch forward.

To Jim’s family and loved ones, we extend our deepest sympathies and unwavering support during this time of sorrow. Jim will be remembered not only for the remarkable man he was but for the countless lives he enriched along the way.

As a REALTOR® since 1973, Jim was recognized as Idaho REALTOR® of the Year in 1997 and served as Idaho REALTORS® President in 1998. His work - as a State Political Coordinator, a Federal Political Coordinator with Senator Crapo, and serving on both the IR Public Policy and Trustee Committee and Legislative Committee - shaped IR’s political and legislative engagements in ways that will continue to guide us for years to come.

A true advocate for REALTORS® and the communities they serve, Jim was widely known as the "Godfather of RPAC." Jim made significant investments to the REALTOR® Political Action Committee - spanning 22 years as a President’s Circle investor, Hall of Fame Recipient, and Idaho Platinum Major Investor. His contributions were a reflection of his deep belief in the importance of advocacy and collective action. In 2023 Idaho REALTORS® established the Jim Johnston RPAC Excellence Award, a lasting tribute to his enduring legacy. The first association to win the RPAC Excellence Award was announced in February of 2024, with Jim present to celebrate the recognition himself.
