A Pathway Forward: A Nod to Deaf History—Past, Present, and Future

There’s something to be said about history: its honor, remembrance, and the path forward. History uniquely helps new generations move forward by highlighting the challenges and opportunities available for those in the present moment to make the world a better place. We learn from the past; indeed, we have no choice but to glean insights from it and move on.

Deaf history is the continued effort of a collective group to move the needle forward. There have been highs and lows, but we as a community prevail. We stand at the intersection of remembrance and anticipation of the future. What a glorious moment in time. From the creation of the first Deaf school in America to celebrating the first Deaf woman to perform American Sign Language at the Super Bowl pre-game and halftime shows, Deaf history is alive and well.

Creating Deaf History Everyday

This month offers us a profound opportunity not only to remember the richness of our past but also to shine a spotlight on those who are actively shaping the future of our community through business, art, education, the nonprofit space, and beyond.

What a beautiful mosaic of resilience, innovation, and triumph. Whether you are in the classroom, boardroom, or a caregiver, you are a part of this history.
