I was proud to vote two weeks ago to give our soldiers and their families the largest pay raise they have had in 8 years. Truth be told, I wanted to give them a larger pay raise - they deserve it. The Constitution requires that the federal government "provide for the common defense," and it is time for the government to take up this responsibility.
Congress has looked at our military for cuts to reduce Uncle Sam's spending problem for far too long. Our soldiers are not only getting a pay raise - we significantly increased the overall defense budget to ensure they have the best tools available. The defenders of our freedom deserve nothing less from us.
While you are out and about enjoying time with your family and friends, please take time to say thank you to an active duty member of the Armed Forces. I hope you will pause to remember those who are serving in harm's way this holiday season. It is never too late to send a care package or a letter of thanks to a solider overseas.
In humble gratitude,
