My childhood summers were spent in the Shriners Hospital, then located next to The Grotto. As a patient for months at a time, I imagined taking the back road I could see out my window to The Grotto's upper level.
Growing up out of town, my parents and I would often travel to take guests to The Grotto, a practice I continued after I began living and working in Portland.
Always a place to find beauty and peace, I became familiar with most areas.
I took my son there at Christmastime several years in a row in his younger days.
The Meditation Chapel was a favorite place and I often visited there, especially after my husband’s sudden passing. I continued to visit through the years, the last few years with my mother.
Now I “visit” there through emails and images (and memories) as I live out of state.
A constant in my life, The Grotto is a place of comfort, inspiration, and beauty to me still.
