Shady Hill Honors Longstanding Employees
|
Shady Hill has a new plaque at the Front Desk honoring faculty and staff members who have long tenure with the school. The plaque specifically celebrates employees in tiers based on length of service, with the highest recognition being employees who have worked at the school for 25+ years. Pictured above, from left to right, are Maggie Beasley, Laura Ryan, Betsy Anderson TTC ’86, and Kabir Sen ’92 TTC ’07, who are all in the 25+ year category.

A Peek into Classrooms: Grade V
|
Grade V students have recently revived an old Shady Hill tradition of designing and knitting their own hats. This program was originated by Judith Austin, a long time studio teacher who started at Shady Hill in 1981. Pictured on the left is Middle School Head Katherine Taketomo '05 TTC '14, holding the knitted hat that she made when she was in Grade V. Learning to knit helps students to learn the values of patience, perseverance, and problem solving. What a wonderful way to rekindle an old Shady Hill tradition!
A Peek into Classrooms: Beginners
|
Beginners in B-North had their first experience with graphing information: They smelled basil, lavender, rosemary, and an aromatic rose, and then recorded their responses. Graphs allow information to be conveyed visually, making them just as effective for 4-year-old pre-readers as for adults! The class observed how varied their reactions were to the same aromas, supporting the work Beginners do around how we are alike and different.
On August 7, Shady Hill alumni came together for a casual gathering in Woods Hole, hosted by TK Baltimore ’89 and Jay Konopka. Guests represented the Classes of 1947, 1951, 1952, 1955, TTC 1987, and 1989. Grandparents and current and former parents were also in attendance. Thank you to TK and Jay for hosting, and to all who attended this wonderful event. If you are interested in hosting alumni in your area next year, please reach out to alumni@shs.org so that we can help facilitate your efforts!
On August 10, more than 130 Shady Hillers gathered at Inkwell Beach on Martha’s Vineyard to celebrate their affinity within the Shady Hill community. New families, current families, young and seasoned alumni, and current and former employees attended the beach day. Alumni artist Ekua Holmes '70 kicked off the day and then others attended her showing at the famed Cousens gallery. The beach day strengthens community and grows representation among Black participants. To celebrate Shady Hill's commitment to diversity over the years, former faculty and DEI directors Sharon Phinney and James Greenwood, and current DEI Director Laniesha Gray all attended. We look forward to this continued tradition!
