A Place to Belong is brought to you by Shady Hill’s Advancement Office in collaboration with the Alumni Board. Now, more than ever, we are committed to sharing news that reminds us all how vibrant and innovative Shady Hill continues to be, while forever embracing the mission and values you hold so dear.
Campus Opening Day
Sounds of laughter and music floated across the school grounds as students returned to campus! Daily health checks and mask-wearing while indoors are still with us, but some restrictions have eased: masking outdoors is now optional, team sports are back, complete with interscholastic competitions; and students are now back in the Ceramics studio, WoodShop and the Makerspace. We are excited to see students moving around campus more this year!

Introducing Dr. Daryl Wright, Assistant Head of School
The new school year brings a change in administrative structure to Shady Hill, with Dr. Daryl Wright taking up the post of Assistant Head. The focus for this newly created position is curriculum oversight, with the goal of strengthening the continuity of our students' experience across the grades.

Dr. Wright was the unanimous choice following our nationwide search last winter. He is in his 22nd year of teaching and school leadership, most recently at the Meadowbrook School in Weston, MA. Just prior to that, he and his wife Stacey spent three years at the American School of Guatemala, with their two young daughters. Earlier positions include high school principal in Washington state, and a teacher in grade five in Atlanta, to name just a few of the stops on Daryl's distinguished career path.

For now, he is immersing himself in the School's culture and practices, getting to know everyone and everything at Shady Hill. Colleagues, students, and parents are all enjoying getting to know Daryl. Among other "fun facts" we have learned:

  • Right out of college, Daryl played pro football in Europe for a year, for the Berlin Bears.

  • Daryl grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, where his mom was the first African American to serve as chief librarian at the city's public library. As a child, Daryl loved accompanying her when she drove the bookmobile to impoverished areas outside Columbia, doing read-alouds and helping people select books. He has been an avid reader since childhood; his favorite way to start the day is to wake early and enjoy quiet reading time.

  • One of his favorite quotes is this one, by Maya Angelou: "Just do right! Right may not be expedient, it may not be profitable, but it will satisfy your soul."
Shady Hill Magazine
The 2021 Magazine should have reached U.S. mailboxes by now. International mail takes longer, but is on its way.

Update your address here if your magazine hasn't found you, and we invite you to read it online in the meantime here.
All-Alumni Assembly
On June 4, The All-Alumni Assembly kicked off Shady Hill’s virtual reunion. All alumni were invited to a 45-minute webinar showcasing lively presentations from a panel of eighth graders, Cheryl Bruun (who retired this spring after 37 years on faculty), and so much more!

Reunion Save the Date
Mark your calendars and start making plans to join your classmates on campus June 3-4, 2022! After two years of remote gatherings, Shady Hill is excited to welcome alumni back in person. This year, we will celebrate the classes ending in '2' and '7', as well as all whose Reunions fell during the past two years: the '0', '1', '5', and '6' cohorts. In other words, 60% of our alumni will be included in the 2022 on-campus gathering. Stay tuned for more information this winter!
