Grandfriends Day is a Hit!
Shady Hill welcomed nearly 500 grandfriends to campus on November 8th to celebrate the important role they play in children's lives. Grandfriends participated in classroom activities, were treated to a lively talk show hosted by a trio of eighth graders, and were serenaded by the entire Grade IV and by our middle school "Singing Space" students. They also enjoyed apple cider and pastries - a perfect treat for a crisp fall day in Cambridge!
Shady Hill Students Reflect on All They Are Grateful For
The Gratitude Assembly is a beloved all-school tradition that gathers the entire community, including parents and caregivers, on the morning before Thanksgiving Break. We live-stream the event for relatives unable to attend in person. This year's Assembly included a creative video in which students across campus shared thoughts on what they are grateful for, in their lives.
Cradles to Crayons Community Service
|
Shady Hill's Middle School Community Service Committee of the Student Board, with support from the service learning coordinator, Ms. Shakman, organized a community-wide service opportunity in collaboration with Cradles to Crayons, a nonprofit with which the School has a long history of collaboration. The students educated their peers about clothing insecurity in Massachusetts, and organized a clothing drive in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving. Then, on the day before the holiday, Shady Hill volunteers -- employees, students, and parents -- rolled up their sleeves at the Cradles to Crayons warehouse, inspecting, sorting and packaging donated clothes.

A Peek into Classrooms: Grade I
|
Students in I-East constructed elaborate "fairy houses" out of woodland materials, and are now proceeding to write descriptions of the houses and their contents, as well as writing letters to the imaginary inhabitants. This is part of the Grade I Thematic Study into communities, which delves into the questions: How are people in a community the same and how are they different? What are the basic needs of people? How do people in a community get their needs met?
A Peek into Classrooms: Grade VIII
|
Do you remember the Gratitude Assemblies you participated in or saw during your time at Shady Hill? This year's event was held on November 26 as students shared poetry, songs and dances. Grade VIII students Dezarae and Laima spoke about the people in their lives that they were grateful for and shared personal anecdotes and stories about their positive impact. Read Dezarae's speech here, and Laima's speech here.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the recent passing of former Shady Hill Music Teacher Meg Burt on Sunday, November 24. Meg came to Shady Hill in September of 1988 and taught here for 20 years before retiring in June 2008. See Meg’s obituary here.
Meg started her music career after completing Hollins University, and went on to graduate from New England Conservatory. Meg served as Organist and Choir Director at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Wayland, Massachusetts and occasionally played at Trinity Church in Concord where her husband was Assistant Minister.

|
|
At Shady Hill, Meg was known for her quiet support of everyone in the community, her commitment to innovation in her teaching practice, excellence in her musical performances with children, and her generosity of spirit that animated all of her interactions. She used her summer grant opportunities to broaden her musical experiences and returned with repertoire, technique, and instruments that she integrated into her curricula and practice. Her work on the Grade III and IV musicals still resonates today and she organized beautiful recitals twice a year for her piano students whom she had prepared with skill, patience, and kindness.
Meg will be remembered for her kindness, care for others, commitment, and creativity. She always thought of others before herself and was a loyal and giving friend. Meg was much admired and beloved in the Shady Hill community and she will be truly missed.
There will be a memorial service for Meg on Tuesday, December 17 at 10:00 AM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street in Concord, Massachusetts.
