School News

All School Read

In November, the entire school participated in an all-school read, a yearly tradition that has not been back since 2020. Librarian Susanna Paterson, an organizer of the day, described the power of collective reading, "Shady Hill has always valued the love of reading, and it is an incredible experience to see it in action. Even with more than 200 students and adults together in one space, a unique quiet settles and you can feel the magic that books can bring. And, of course, the magic in the collective giggles of the youngest students enjoying a story together!" Students in B-II listened to read-alouds and had book browsing time near a cozy fire in the Assembly Hall, while the rest of the students, faculty and staff enjoyed QR (Quiet Reading) time together in the gym and the library.

Middle School Arts Share

At the end of the first Arts Elective Unit, Middle School came together to share the singing, performing, and studio art they studied during the first semester. Grade VII and VIII students have the opportunity to take classes in the arts taught by Shady Hill School music, studio, and shop teachers, as well as several professional artists and musicians from outside the school community.

Just as exciting as the artistic skills they develop are the way students support each other. A skilled dancer might get to study a new genre but someone new to textile arts might take risks in learning how to sew. When students go outside their comfort zone, they are supported and cheered on by their peers!

Class Notes!

Share your update in the spring magazine! Class notes are due by January 20. We cannot wait to hear what you've been doing!

Performance Arts is a highlight of Thematic Study and Central Subject Learning at Shady Hill.

We know we have more alumni in the arts. If you're acting, playing in the orchestra pit, or part of the stage crew, please let us know when you have a show!

Even if you're not in production, we'd love hear about your performance memories. If you're a PAL (Parent of Alumni) feel free to also contribute - what was your child's part in the Grade IV Hades play?

Have a photo? Send it to us so we can feature it at reunion this June. Please submit to alumni@shs.org

Host an alumni mini party!

We loved seeing Dara Kosberg '93 using a party box to bring alumni together to attend the L.A. performance of her one woman show.

Gather a group of 5 alumni and the School will send you a party box of swag for your watch party or game night. The alumni box is for alumni of all ages.

Get connected with a box by reaching out to Gus Polstein.
