After 25 years at Shady Hill School, Lower School Psychologist Mark Steward will be retiring from Shady Hill at the end of the current school year. Mark has served the community with the utmost dedication and care, guiding and comforting faculty, staff, and parents with his signature phrase “Do not worry alone.”
Over the years, Mark has contributed to the health and vitality of the entire Shady Hill community. With his friendly smile, openness, and helpful advice on child development and behavior, he has worked tirelessly to create a supportive and caring environment. He has offered Zoom and in-person parenting groups where parents have discussed the use of technology, societal pressures on children, and setting behavioral expectations. In addition to his role as the Lower School psychologist, from 2001-2017 Mark was known as the “Master Scheduler,” responsible for making all the class schedules for the school. He transitioned the School from a 5-day to a 6-day schedule (and back to the current 5-day) significantly contributing to the smooth functioning of the school.

A Peek into Classrooms: Grade IV
|

|
|
Grade IV explored a new robotics set this Fall called LEGO Education SPIKE Essential. In Ms. Small's class, students learned to code their LEGO creations to move on demand or play music. They had the freedom to create their own LEGO characters and problem-solve through storytelling with the SPIKE App. This hands-on and interactive experience is typical of Shady Hill's creative, joyful STEAM learning.
Shady Hill has a reputation as an innovator when it comes to LEGO robotics. Facilitated by longtime teacher Barbara Bratzel (who also consults to Tufts University's Center for Engineering and Education Outreach), our STEAM faculty are forever designing projects that advance the STEAM learning goals of open-ended exploration, creative problem-solving, and team-based collaboration. Ms. Bratzel shares her expertise in professional-development workshops for teachers. Her newest book, Getting Started with LEGO Robotics, written with a friend and colleague who teaches in Tasmania, is due out in the spring.

A Peek into Classrooms: Grade VI

VI Radlauer class prepared for the sock puppet performances of original Anansi plays. Students first wrote short stories based on African folk tales, then adapted the stories for the "stage." The students enacted their puppet productions for an audience of Grade II and V. |

Shady Hill enthusiastically welcomed back competitive athletics this Fall, after last year's pandemic-driven hiatus. Each competition and practice was filled with energy and joy, and families were jubilant to be back on the sidelines, cheering. Special shout-out to our Girls Varsity Soccer team, on their undefeated season!
Students are now practicing for Winter season sports and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish together next.
