School Year Wraps Up and the Community Honors Biko Mangcu
As Shady Hill celebrated Lower School closing and Grade VIII graduation, the School also mourned the loss of Biko
Mangcu, a Beginner who tragically lost his life last month. Inspired by Biko who was always full of joy, students of all ages decorated classroom windows with hearts and the community wore blue (Biko's favorite color) glittered heart pins during the end of the year celebrations. It was also announced that the School bell has been renamed "Biko's Bell," so that when it is rung each morning, we can continue to think of and honor our friend: a drummer, a dancer and "the Mayor of B-South."
A Peek into Classrooms: Grade II
The Grade II Charles River Museum extravaganza took place June 3 in person, once again. The one-day museum is a culmination of eight months of art, writing, and projects showcasing second graders' understanding of the natural and cultural history of the Charles River basin. Students proudly explained their museum exhibits to parents, siblings, and caregivers, all of whom were duly impressed. Click here to view more photos of this capstone Grade II event.
A Peek into Classrooms: Social Justice Day, Grades V-VIII
On April 11, Shady Hill held its fifth annual Middle School Social Justice Day. This year's theme was "Changing the Tide: Individuals Making Collective Impact." Students in Grades V-VIII enjoyed a stimulating full-day conference-style experience that included a keynote presentation by a panel of young alumni Montanna Riggs '15, Audrey Lin '15, L-J Shen-Filerman '19, and Jennat Jounaidi '20 modeling activism at their high schools and colleges. The day continued with a wide choice of workshops on topics ranging from neurodiversity to privilege in sports to protecting the environment, to getting politically involved -- to name just a few. Many of the workshops were student-led, others were presented by faculty, and all of them created a space for productive conversation and thoughtful reflection on various aspects of identity, cycles of oppression and ways to be allies and changemakers.

Alumni on Campus
Piggybacking on the Shady Hill Fair, in its adjusted spring time slot of April 30, we invited all members of the Class of 2020 and their parents to gather for a belated celebration of their pandemic-pre-empted Shady Hill graduation. Back in June of 2020, they were feted with lawn signs and a car parade, so it was exciting now to bring them together in person for a celebration featuring cake, balloons, a short welcome by Mark Stanek, and a rousing cheer from all Fair attendees. And like all our alumni still in high school, members of the Class of 2020 also received complimentary Fair admission.
After two years of Zoom-based Reunion programming, we were thrilled to host Reunion in person once again, on the afternoon/evening of June 3, on campus. Marking his 75th Reunion, we welcomed David Clarke '47 as our most senior graduate in attendance. At the other end of the spectrum, 15 members of the Class of 2017 gathered to celebrate their five-years-out milestone. In all, we hosted 49 people a strong turnout, including many whose "official" reunion was during the pandemic's Zoom-only years. Program highlights included watching the Grade IV Greek Olympics, participating in (or cheering for) the alumni-vs.-students Ultimate Frisbee game, various panel discussions featuring students, faculty and administrators, and student-led campus tours. The evening culminated with a light supper outdoors on the Green, enlivened by impromptu singing of old Shady Hill songs, led by the Class of 1962.
Returning to traditional in-person events meant inviting the Class of 2018 back to campus for their High School Graduation Party, on June 14. Their parents were also invited, and it was hard to say which group was more enthusiastic about the chance to catch up with one another. Clearly, Shady Hill bonds among PALS (our shorthand for "Parents of Alumni") are every bit as strong as those among the alumni themselves.
