As these photos show, the start of each new academic year is a time for reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, and for settling into the rhythms of school after the time away. Shady Hill teachers know a smooth transition is Priority Number One, so they devote plenty of time and energy to getting students off the very best start. To quote from Shady Hill's Belief Statements, "A strong, interdependent community is the framework for academic confidence and social and emotional health."

A Peek into Classrooms: Field Trips, Grades V-VIII
|
|

|
To build community and cooperation, each middle school grade started off the year with its own grade-specific field trip to Project Adventure, an outdoor education nonprofit located in Beverly, MA. Using ropes courses and purposeful games, our middle school built team spirit, self-awareness, and collaboration. Students pooled their ideas to overcome challenges together while balancing on tightropes, hanging from harnesses, and climbing to the treetops. The day was tremendous fun, and at the same time, it set a foundation of teamwork that positioned each grade for a successful school year.

Shady Hill Seeks Substitute Teachers
We are looking to expand our pool of substitute teachers. Subs can opt to work just a day or two a week — or more. We need classroom teachers as well as those with specific experience in music, physical education, etc. Retired educators, young alums, or anyone who has experience with kids in a group setting (coaching, camp, etc.), are encouraged to apply.

The Shady Hill fair is just around the corner: Saturday, October 15 from 10AM-3PM!
Celebrate all your favorite parts of the Fair; from the Alumni Slush booth, to the balloon smash, from the fun house to the bouncy houses, there's something for everyone! Alumni are invited to volunteer at the slush booth. Email Meg Grossman for more information or to sign up for a 1/2 hour shift.

Alumni Art Show

Mark your calendars for the much anticipated Alumni Art Show on March 2o to March 23, 2023! A special reception will take place on the evening of Wednesday, March 23 from 7PM-8:30PM.
After our pandemic hiatus, we couldn't be more excited about the return of this ever-popular event. Exhibitors are alumni and/or faculty, but the reception is for everyone!

Black Alumni gathered over the summer for an alumni affinity event planned by a stellar committee of alumni working closely with the Shady Hill Alumni Office.
Attendees spanned the decades, from Dick Evans ’51, our first Black graduate, up through young alum Sophia George ’21, who performed "Rise Up," a song she first learned for the Black History Assembly when she was in Grade V.
Assistant Head of School Dr. Daryl Wright moderated a vibrant discussion about what alumni appreciated during their time as SHS students, and what they’d like to see going forward. One rousing answer: more such gatherings!
