Shady Hill in the News

In August, Shady Hill was featured in the Cambridge Day News! The article highlighted a sixth-grade trip to Brattle Street that took place earlier this year where students viewed the “Forgotten Souls” installation. They learned about Cambridge's history and discussed the connections between enslavement in the Caribbean and the wealth that flowed into Cambridge in the 17th and 18th centuries.

A Peek into Classrooms: Grade VIII

On September 14, a group of 21 Grade VIII students volunteered at Shady Hill's New Parent Dinner. They did a fabulous job greeting new families and serving food over the course of the night.

Student Nathan C. described his experience this way, in the student-led newspaper called UpQuark:

The new parent dinner was a blast! We learned waitering etiquette, scraped plates, and “pardon my reach”ed our way through the night! The only disappointment was having to eat pizza in the presence of Michelin Star food… I was tempted to sneak a few bites! But no, we all held arguably heroic composure and I’m sure the new parents were impressed and satisfied with our service.

Shady Hill Seeks Substitute Teachers

We are looking to expand our pool of substitute teachers. Subs can opt to work just a day or two a week — or more. We need classroom teachers as well as those with specific experience in music, physical education, etc. Retired educators, young alums, or anyone who has experience with kids in a group setting (coaching, camp, etc.), are encouraged to apply.

Summer Alumni Gatherings

On August 12, more than 100 Shady Hill Alumni families and current families gathered in Martha's Vineyard on the Inkwell for community building. A few trustees were also in attendance. There was water play, a luncheon and community. Ekua Holmes '70 also opened at Cousens Gallery that evening and invited families to visit. The event reconnected some alumni with former teachers like Tamyko Morris and Galen White who were proud to see their students were "grown up!"

On August 18, Shady Hillers in the White Mountains of NH gathered in Chocorua, hosted by siblings Amey Moot '77 and Alex Moot '77. Guests represented the Classes of 1945, 1946, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1954, as well as a PAL whose three children were in the Classes of 2011 and 2014. If other graduates would care to host alumni in their area next summer, please reach out to [email protected] so we can support your efforts!
