A Politics Reset

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Washington politics has always been noisy. Unfortunately, with the decades-long decline we’ve witnessed in the field of journalism and the loss of credible media outlets, D.C. politics oftentimes overwhelms the airwaves and social channel at the expense of more important local news. In Washington, the political parties are all but dead, and in their place are warring ideological tribes that swear to be right one hundred percent of the time, all while the other tribes must be wrong one hundred percent of the time. It’s time for all of us to “reset” and start focusing on the policymaking decisions happening immediately in front of us.

Let me share some context. I served as Mayor of the City of New Castle from 2019 to 2023. Our municipality, the tenth largest city in Delaware, had at the time a population of about 5,500 people, an annual budget of just over $5 million dollars, and a workforce of 40 employees. The geography of the city is relatively small and covers just over four miles. Almost 1,000 people voted in that 2019 election. Let me contrast that with the 2024 Colonial School District election. The school district is geographically huge and includes approximately 100,000 Delawareans, a budget of $200 million dollars, and schools that serve about 8,700 students with a staff of almost 750 employees. Only 362 people cast votes in that 2024 election.

On Wednesday, we’ll see ADP employment data from April, while on Thursday, we’ll see construction spending and consumer credit spending from March. We wrap up on Friday with U.S. employment and unemployment figures from April.

Thursday and Friday calls include Becton Dickinson, Carlyle Group, Enovis, Grainger, McDonald’s, Fortis, and dozens of others.
