Digestion Also Occurs via the Skin.
It took me a long time to wrap my brain around this concept, but our skin DOES DIGEST what is put on it. We know this after applying sun screen or lotion or makeup. It gets absorbed into the skin after a while and then disappears! That's why choosing what to put on the skin is so important.
Here's another concept...you skin has a MICROBIOME (read: microbes living on it) just like your GUT has its own microbiome. Lots of money, products and discussion is being had around the gut's microbial makeup and how to nourish it with pre- and probiotics, but do we talk much about the skin and feeding it the right prebiotics?
The main microbe on your skin is Staphylococcus epidermidis and it is very helpful to us by keeping other microbes in check. S. epidermidis is also known to cleanse, beautify, and correct the appearance of the skin. Guess what oil it likes to eat? Yep, the sebum(oil) that we make from the Sebaceous Glands (see diagram above) of the skin. But, just like other areas that tend to dry out as we age, and especially in Winter, the production of this sebum can be reduced. The good news is that your skin's microbes also like to eat a similar type of oil- Sesame Oil. " Daily sesame oil application has been shown to feed all the skin's microbiome!"- Dr. John Douillard, Lifespa.com
But not just any Sesame Oil. The ancient holistic wisdom of Ayurveda has MANY, MANY types of products, mainly sesame oil based, that are slow cooked with herbs like Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Bala, Tulsi, Valerian and Ajurna. These herbs are absorbed and digested by the skin and brought into the body's blood circulation.
Lucky for you, I'm hosting my annual Deep Winter Skin Renewal Workshop this Friday, Feb. 9 at 7pm to teach the ancient technique of Abhyanga Self-Oil Massage using Sesame Oil steeped in:
Ashwagandha,
Shatavari,
Tulsi &
Valerian

This oil is an organic product made here in the US and safe for all skin types and ages. I'd love to have you join me, space is still available! We'll self-massage w/nourishing sesame oil, make a hydrating face mask and rest in restorative yoga poses, yummy self-care on this Winter eve!
