The Department for Aging and Independent Living (DAIL) shared the following information with KSLA in a recent newsletter:
In 2006, the State Fire Marshal's Office issued a letter to all ALCs summarizing the following requirements for evacuation plans under the Life Safety Code. DAIL applies these requirements in conducting certification reviews. The letter stated, "Each assisted living community must keep evacuation capability documentation, which must revised with each fire drill as needed." This includes:
- A floor plan of the building with room numbers;
- An indication if the client in the room is mobile or mobile non-ambulatory;
- An indication if the client in the room needs to be assisted in a transfer or prompted to exit the building;
- The amount of time in minutes it takes the client to evacuate from their room to the exit discharge."
The letter also states that an exit time of more than 13 minutes is considered "unacceptable" under the Code.
