THE SACRED TRADITION OF VOTER DRIVES |
|
At the height of the Civil Rights Movement in 1964, an alliance of Black-led groups including the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), and the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) organized “Freedom Summer” – a series of voter drives to increase the number of registered Black voters in Mississippi. A multiracial coalition of peaceful volunteers showed up to turn this dream into a reality. We know what happened next.
Their nonviolence was met with extreme violence. White supremacists beat them, arrested them, even killed three young activists – Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney. But that attracted national attention, and the pressure that followed helped ensure the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Today, we continue the sacred tradition of holding voter drives across the country, in person as well as by phone, text, email, social media, and postcard. In Georgia, we are honored to have Dr. Harvey Kaufman – who was registering Black voters in Mississippi during Freedom Summer '64, and was a classmate of Schwerner’s – now organizing Field Team 6 voter drives.
Every drive we hold in Georgia gets us closer to re-electing Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock, Georgia’s first Black senator, this November… and electing the legendary Stacey Abrams as the first Black, female governor in American history. And if we can flip two more Senate seats and hold the House, we’ll be able to pass laws that will restore and expand the progress of the Voting Rights Act.

National Voter Registration Day... just once a year? PREPOSTEROUS! That's why, together with a consortium of national grassroots voter registration organizations, we've turned National Voter Registration Day into a monthly event!
And February 8 is your next chance to build on the wild success of our first Day of Action (Jan 6) by helping register Democrats. (We'll be holding these on the 2nd Tuesday of every month until the November election.)
Pssst: we are secretly in competition with our sister orgs, and we want to put up more registration events than any of 'em. It's not too late to add one of your own!

AZ = TRIPLE WORD SCORE
The new maps have been ratified, confirming that Arizona will be absolutely crucial in our fight to save our Senate majority, save our House majority, and win down-ballot in November. Hence: TRIPLE WORD SCORE!
To save the Senate majority, we must re-elect our astronaut Senator Mark Kelly (D).
When it comes to saving our House majority, our goals are to boot Trumpian Republican Rep. David Schweikert (AZ-01), to re-elect Democratic Rep. Greg Stanton (AZ-04), and to elect a Democrat to take over the seat Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D) is leaving (AZ-06).
Down-ballot, we absolutely must elect a Democrat to the Governor's Mansion to replace uber-Trumpy Gov. Doug Ducey (R)!
The good news is that any Democrat we register anywhere in the state can help win the Senate and Governor's race, and possibly a House race as well.

It's a good time to join the party as every Wednesday we jump onto the web to raise awareness for Field Team 6's efforts to #RegisterDemocrats and save the world. We’ll also be recruiting volunteers for our ongoing in-person voter drive trainings, phonebanks, textbanks and postcarding programs.

VOLUNTEER SHOUT-OUT: KATHY RAWLE |
|
This week, the Field Team 6 appreciation party is lighting the virtual fireworks for an incredible volunteer, Kathy Rawle.
Her activist roots go all the way back to the 1950’s, when she handed out flyers for her father’s campaign for school board in New York. Then during the 1960’s, “I was a journalism student at Northwestern University, so I was a witness/participant in antiwar and civil rights work.”
Kathy lived in Boston for 30 years, and after a career in journalism and corporate communications, she got active again, working on campaigns in Lexington, MA for Board of Selectmen, tax-cap overrides, and marriage equality.
Eventually, she swore off the freezing cold New England weather and moved to Hawaii for 12 years. “I worked on the first Obama (favorite son!) campaign, marriage equality, local offices, while also organizing to fight invasive species (there’s nothing like hunting tree frogs at night in ginger patches).”
After the 2016 election, she moved to Seattle, which suited her activist nature better than Hawaii’s “surf's up” attitude. “I joined Postcards To Voters in 2017 and organized postcard groups around Seattle (we still keep those going), then ‘graduated’ to texting/moderating with several groups, including the DNC, Biden/Harris and the combined Ossoff/Warnock wins.”
Kathy was psyched to join the Field Team 6 family. "It gave me a reason to use that Twitter account lying fallow. And the postcards are cool!”
Kathy says, “I kick myself when I realize how long and how stealthily the right wing has been taking over the machinery of government. We now have decades of work to catch up on, and I can’t think of a better use for my pandemic/retirement time.”
She’s tired of people saying the Dems are bad at messaging. “The Republicans are good at it because ‘they’ are the 1% writing them and using those enormous tax cuts and pandemic profits to flood us with them. When more of us figure out that we are 'the Democrats,' that Blue Wave might just become a tsunami.”
Kathy, we love your passion for postcarding, your social storming chops, and your dedication to democracy. And we look forward to building that people-powered tsunami in 2022 and beyond!

We've been doing these awesome little videos as part of each battleground state's Voter Drive in a Box. They're fun, they're quick, and they teach you exactly how to register Democrats using either a paper form or with Voterizer.org on a smartphone or tablet.
Georgia… is on our mind! Georgia did all of us—and democracy itself—a huge solid in January of 2021 by electing Senators Jon Ossoff and the Reverend Raphael Warnock. We want to help turn the rest of Georgia blue and pave the way for our hero Stacey Abrams to take her rightful place in the Peach State Governor’s Mansion.
